Biobased lab tubes from recycled cooking oil

LC series achieves ACT® Ecolabel 2.0 certifi cation

Agilent’s Infi nity III LC Series has become the company’s fi rst range of instruments to be awarded the updated My Green Lab® ACT® Ecolabel 2.0 - a mark of environmentally responsible design in the laboratory. The announcement highlights Agilent’s growing focus on helping laboratories adopt more sustainable workfl ows without compromising analytical performance.

As sustainability continues to infl uence purchasing and operational decisions in the lab, tools like the ACT label help scientists make informed choices. The updated Ecolabel 2.0 provides verifi ed, science-based environmental impact data for lab products, including metrics on energy use, packaging, end-of-life disposal, and more.

Designed to support energy-effi cient workfl ows and smart solvent use, the Infi nity III LC Series incorporates automated functions and modular components. This makes it possible for labs to upgrade existing Agilent Infi nity II systems to newer technologies - a cost- effective strategy to reduce environmental impact while extending instrument lifecycle. Notably, the Infi nity III systems will also be the fi rst Agilent LCs to offer CO₂ footprint data directly to users.

Eppendorf has expanded its sustainable consumables portfolio with the launch of Eppendorf Safe-Lock Tubes BioBased – made entirely from renewable, second- generation raw materials. These biobased feedstocks, sourced from recycled food oil wastes and residues, are processed using the mass-balance approach to create certified polypropylene without compromising performance.

Available in 0.5 mL, 1.5 mL, and 2.0 mL sizes, these tubes – widely known as “Eppis®” in laboratories – match the quality and reliability of conventional Eppendorf tubes. They join other BioBased products in the company’s range, including Eppendorf Tubes® BioBased, epT.I.P.S.® BioBased pipette tips, and twin.tec® Trace PCR Plates BioBased.

This development reflects Eppendorf’s commitment to sustainability, focusing not only on innovative product design but also on responsible material sourcing. Following the principles of ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’, the aim is to produce high-quality polymer labware with a significantly reduced environmental footprint.

Manufactured at Eppendorf’s consumables facility in Oldenburg, Germany, the tubes are produced under the ISCC PLUS certification system (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) and have earned the My Green Lab® ACT Label for sustainability, highlighting accountability, consistency, and transparency.

As industries increasingly strive for sustainability, analytical techniques must evolve to reduce environmental impact while maintaining efficiency and accuracy. Metrohm’s OMNIS Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) system offers an innovative, eco-friendly solution that minimises waste, reduces energy consumption, and streamlines analytical processes across various industries.

OMNIS NIR is a state-of-the-art spectroscopy system designed for rapid, non-destructive analysis of liquid and solid samples. Utilising near-infrared (NIR) technology, it enables precise, real-time measurements without requiring chemical reagents or extensive sample preparation. This advanced system significantly reduces chemical waste by eliminating the need for solvents and reagents, a key advantage over traditional wet chemistry techniques. It also operates with minimal power requirements, lowering overall energy consumption and contributing to reduced carbon emissions.

By performing non-destructive analysis, OMNIS NIR ensures that samples can be reused or returned to production, minimising material waste. Measurements are completed within seconds, allowing for high-throughput analysis and reducing overall testing time, which translates into energy and resource savings. Additionally, the elimination of hazardous chemicals enhances workplace safety by reducing exposure to toxic substances while also protecting the environment.

The versatility of OMNIS NIR makes it ideal for a range of industries focused on sustainability. In the pharmaceutical sector, it supports green manufacturing practices while maintaining rigorous quality control. The food and beverage industry benefits from safer, more efficient analysis without generating chemical waste. In chemical and petrochemical applications, OMNIS NIR provides a sustainable alternative to traditional testing methods. The agriculture sector also gains from its ability to facilitate soil and crop analysis without the environmental burden of reagent use.

Metrohm’s OMNIS NIR represents a significant advancement in sustainable analytical technology. By eliminating the need for chemical reagents, reducing energy consumption, and offering rapid, precise analysis, it provides an eco-friendly solution that helps industries achieve their sustainability goals. As green chemistry continues to gain momentum, OMNIS NIR stands as a vital tool in the transition toward a more sustainable future.
