26 Choosing an appropriate digestion process for your laboratory

Quality analysis for ICP-MS and AA/ICP-OES analysis starts with good sample preparation and for this to be successful, effective microwave digestion is the fi rst step. For reliable analyses, complete digestion is essential and should be coupled with high throughput, safety, and performance.

The range of sample types requiring microwave digestion and analysis for trace metals has grown signifi cantly in recent years. At the same time, sample workloads have increased, and turnaround time reduced. In addition, the development of collision cell ICP-MS has widened its applicability to more complex sample types placing additional demands on microwave acid digestion and lower detection limits and fast analysis times require lower blank contribution and higher throughput.

Microwave digestion systems sometimes lack a particular specifi cation such as capacity and temperature capability however the Milestone instruments from Analytix are a complete family of six systems that ensure all application requirements are met.

Three rotor based systems for batch processing are available. The ETHOS LEAN with a 14 place rotor was specifi cally designed to provide high-quality closed-vessel acid digestion for laboratories with limited throughput needs.

The ETHOS EASY and ETHOS UP systems offer enhanced sample capacity with a choice of rotors from 15 samples to 44 plus microwave solvent extraction, high-temperature fusion, vacuum evaporation and even organic and inorganic synthesis or protein hydrolysis. The ETHOS EASY and ETHOS UP also offer multifunctional capabilities with digestion, extraction, and ashing all in the same system, perfect for laboratories with constant changing sample preparation requirements.

Three single reaction chamber (SRC) systems are available where any combination of sample types and weights with different acid chemistries can be digested at the same time so there is no need to batch samples of the same type into separate runs. Minimal handling also speeds up the preparation stage. A top temperature of 300°C and an operating pressure up to 199 bar enables complete digestion of the most diffi cult samples.

The ultraWAVE systems can digest up to 40 samples from start to fi nish in 35 minutes and are available with 4 racks from 7 to 40 vials. The fully automated ultraCLAVE has 9 available racks with capacities from 3 to 77 samples.

All Milestone microwave systems are controlled via a full-colour touchscreen interface and the enhanced systems offer full data storage and transfer to laboratory LIMS systems. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/zAwy and ilmt.co/PL/pxwA

65431pr@reply-direct.com Measuring instrument delivers particle analysis in HD

The A-28 is based on the measuring principle of dynamic image analysis. It covers a very wide measuring range and generates up to 75 high-resolution images per second. The Fritsch particle sizer provides immediate and easy-to-analyse results for particle shape and size in all measuring applications for powders and bulk solids as well as suspensions and emulsions. The A-28 is a very simple and cost-effective alternative to sieve analysis.

The A-28 is suitable for both free-fall applications and wet dispersions. With a single 5-megapixel industrial camera, the particle analyser covers an extremely wide measuring range and visualises large to very small particles in high-resolution images. The particularly powerful LED lighting guarantees homogeneous illumination of the image fi eld. For dry measurement of powders and bulk solids, the measuring range extends from 20 to 20,000 μm. For wet dispersion of suspensions and emulsions, the measuring device can detect particles between 5 and 3,000 μm. With its dynamic image analysis, the A-28 offers all the advantages of a microscope analysis, but at the same time captures a much larger number of particles at up to 75 images per second. This fl ood of images is processed by the analysis software and generates measurement results for over 20 parameters in a matter of seconds. Numerous pieces of information regarding particle size and particle shape, such as the distribution of the Feret diameter, the aspect ratio or the roundness, can be displayed individually. Dependencies between up to three freely confi gurable parameters can also be displayed in a point cloud diagram and used to analyse the sample in depth. To make the measurement as uncomplicated as possible, the A 28 software offers predefi ned SOPs for the most common measuring tasks. For example, individual settings for the parameters of the feeder, wet dispersion or the camera can be defi ned as SOPs and called up again for subsequent measurements. This makes the measuring process reliably reproducible.

The A-28 is a real upgrade, especially in comparison to classic sieve analysis, as it also provides valuable information on particle shape in addition to particle size distribution and allows a division into up to 1000 size classes. As it does not require any weighing, sieve tower set-up or time-consuming cleaning the particle analyser is also a time and cost-saving alternative. It also eliminates the follow-up costs associated with calibration and the purchase of new sieves. Overall, the A-28 is particularly impressive for demanding applications in an industrial environment. For example, the lenses with their simple, robust design are sealed against dust and moisture.

New generation of laboratory balances

As METTLER TOLEDO celebrates 80 years of laboratory weighing excellence, the company would like to take this moment to highlight the introduction of its new Standard and Advanced Balance portfolio, launched last year. This portfolio, which includes the MX, MR, MA, and LA lines, positions METTLER TOLEDO at the forefront of laboratory weighing by delivering simplicity, performance, and robustness. With these new balances, you can benefi t from enhanced resilience, improved measurement performance, and an even simpler user interface combined with smart features, ensuring a smooth, ergonomic, and sustainable weighing experience.

The MX balances boost weighing performance, enable effortless data management, and user-friendliness. With innovative engineering, these balances provide an ergonomic weighing experience and satisfy advanced weighing requirements. Highly intuitive and with a multitude of smart features, such as ErgoDoors, SmartPan, StatusLight, LevelControl and advanced routine testing functions, these balances simplify your weighing tasks. To easily comply with GxP regulations, they offer user management and activity log traceability.

MR balances deliver consistently accurate results even in challenging weighing environments. Thanks to their robust construction, these balances are the perfect choice whether you weigh in a busy lab or the challenging conditions of a production setting. A range of built-in applications and connectivity options make MR balances highly versatile.

To make every day weighing easy, MA balances are designed with a focus on valuable, practical features, and they deliver quality without compromise. Touch control on a bright LCD screen, simple menus, guided applications and easy result documentation make weighing a breeze. These balances are also available in a compact portable design with battery operation that saves valuable space on your workbench and enables you to easily transport your balance.

With the LA balances, you can experience affordable quality with all the basic functions you need for essential weighing tasks. LA balances feature a bright LCD display for optimal reading in all conditions. With an RS232 interface, you can connect to a printer, secondary display, or other device. Each balance has three integrated applications (weighing, dynamic weighing, and piece counting).
