Laboratory Products 43 Diving Deep for a Sustainable Solution to Eliminate Single-Use Plastics
Kelpi, a sustainable material innovation company, is using Asynt’s DrySyn oil-free heating blocks and CondenSyn waterless air condensers to combat marine plastic pollution and reduce the production of single-use plastics made from fossil fuels.
Dr Stefanie Federle, Chief Scientific Officer, explained: “Kelpi is here to end the madness of using fossil fuels to create largely unrecycled, single-use packaging that takes hundreds of years to degrade, poisoning our oceans and polluting our landscape. We’re here to pioneer a new generation of solutions that leaves the oil where it belongs – in the ground - and offer compostable, marine-safe alternatives manufactured from seaweed.”
Even as finalists for the Tom Ford Plastic Innovation Prize powered by Lonely Whale, the Kelpi team continues to make progress in their mission to transform packaging for the food and cosmetic industries. With £3 million in seed funding secured, the company is actively pursuing its goal of reducing reliance on single-use plastics.
Stefanie confirmed that most of their chemists had worked with DrySyn before, during their PhD or undergraduate studies at the University of Bath or University of Bristol, so when it came to kitting out the Kelpi lab, the choice was obvious. She commented: “We already knew that they are great products and, in addition to the sustainability advantages, we especially like them for their ease of use. We’ve been using DrySyn since Kelpi started!”
When handling volumes of up to 100 mL before scaling up, Kelpi’s scientists rely on the DrySyn MULTI platform to mix reagents, conduct extractions, and carry out chemical synthesis at temperatures ranging from ambient to 150°C. For heating reactions, they employ a reflux setup with the DrySyn and CondenSyn air condensers.
Kelpi’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its core mission and guides the company’s choices as a business and employer. To this end, they prioritise environmentally friendly laboratory tools that are both efficient and user-friendly. The DrySyn and CondenSyn perfectly align with these values, and Kelpi’s innovative scientists are utilising them to drive the transition away from single- use plastics derived from fossil fuels.

Rapid DNA Sample Selection
Leading Dutch genome diagnostics lab, AGDx, is using Ziath’s Mohawk semi-automated tube picker to retrieve DNA samples accurately and rapidly from their extensive biobank.
Senior Chief Analyst in the AGDx laboratory at the VU Medical Centre, Dr Marja van Stralen said: “A few years ago, with stored DNA samples rising exponentially, the situation had arisen that we could no longer find the right samples so easily. As a result, our laboratory switched from the classic microcentrifuge tubes to 2D barcoded tubes in SBS format 96 position racks for storage of all DNA samples to enable us to efficiently manage our DNA biobank. In recent years, specialised knowledge has been increasingly required to perform DNA diagnostics and there are more and more diseases in which DNA diagnostics can support the correct diagnosis with current techniques. As a result, the number of requests to our laboratory grows every year. As a result, it is vital that we can quickly and accurately pick specific DNA samples enabling us to use the right tests with our various diagnostic techniques. Efficient picking of samples is especially important in larger studies which require a lot of Biobank DNA materials to be found quickly. Since the arrival of the Ziath Mohawk semi-automated tube picker, just over a year ago, we have been able to accurately pick and process more DNA samples in an efficient manner. As a result of this successful implementation, and the great support received from Ziath, our laboratory is in the process of acquiring a second Mohawk.”
The Ziath Mohawk semi-automated tube picker utilizes a linear rack reader and ninety-six pins to quickly pick frozen or thawed sample tubes from a scanned rack. Unlike slow and costly robotics, the Mohawk can scan and pick tubes in seconds. No set up or calibration is required, as control is achieved through software that offers an easy-to-use interface. Tubes can be picked from a single rack or from multiple racks using a picklist. The picklist can be initiated by scanning the 1D code on a rack, or it can be manually selected. The Mohawk can also be connected to a 2D barcode scanner for extra sample tracking and security, generating picklists directly from the tube barcodes. For further traceability, a 1D scanner for reading the rack barcode is also included.

Chemical Resistant Diaphragm Pumps
The C Series chemical resistant diaphragm pumps from Wiggens are an excellent solution for continuous, oil-free pumping of corrosive gases and vapours and meet demanding applications. The multi-stage construction provides an advantageous combination of high pumping speed and ultimate low vacuum. All major parts in contact with pumped media are made of PTFE which are ideal for extremely aggressive/corrosive gases and vapours. The sealing system provides reduced leakage rates for improved ultimate vacuum (1mbar).
Wiggens continues to extend the line of diaphragm pumps and apply new technologies to this series. More powerful motor drive multi- stage pump heads, which are an excellent choice for applications with corrosive gases and vapours with high vacuum requirements. Typical applications are pilot reactors, industrial rotary evaporators, semiconductor industry, drying ovens and many other laboratory applications. The maximus pumping speed can be up to 145L/min.
Thanks to the frequency conversion motor, the powerful pump could reach a high vacuum in a short time with good stability, which is ideal for larger laboratory applications.
Meanwhile, the frequency conversion vacuum pump can reduce the noise in the laboratory and extend the service life. Please contact Wiggens to learn more about vacuum in the experiment. More information online:

New SpeedMixer Mixes Liquids and 2 kg in Gallon-Sized Container Germany’s Hauschild Engineering has introduced a new range of laboratory mixers, the Hauschild SpeedMixer®
SMART DAC 1100/1500/2000 LR series,
featuring dual asymmetric centrifuge technology that can hold and mix a gallon-sized container. These new mixers have an extended radius for greater capacity and include advanced features such as vacuum and robotics, variable counter rotation, and automatic pot cooling. Users can also opt for sensor integration for temperature and gas, as well as remote control and QR code reader capabilities.
Achieving precise mixing ratios and temperatures within a specified time frame is crucial in research and development laboratories worldwide. Homogeneous mixing without bubbles and controlled or cooled temperatures are essential for optimal results. The Hauschild Speedmixer® accelerates material development and prototyping by ensuring precise and efficient mixing.
Mixing materials with low specific weight can be challenging and requires special technology. Hauschild Engineering has addressed this issue by offering an LR (Long Radius) configuration for their medium and large series SpeedMixer®
models. The extended arm improves material conductivity in the cup holder.
Previously, the SMART DAC 1100/1500/2000 series of large-scale units could only mix a maximum of 0.6 gallons of liquid or up to two kilograms. However, Hauschild Engineering has now introduced an optional Long Radius (LR) for these mixers, allowing for mixing in a gallon-sized bucket. These new and improved ‘mixing giants’ are now available for purchase: SMART DAC1100.3 FVZ LR and SMART DAC1100.4 VAC-P LR; SMART DAC1500.3 FVZ LR and SMART DAC1500.4 VAC-P LR: SMART DAC2000.3 FVZ LR and SMART DAC2000.4 VAC-P LR.
The previously known grammages up to 1 kg, up to 1.5 kg and up to 2 kg remain. More information online:
