10 Cryogenic Trapping System for Gas Chromatography

GL Sciences has released an upgrade to their CryoFocus 4. Cryogenic cold trapping is a technique where part of a column is cooled down to temperatures down to -150°C. Analytes are focused at the head of the column by cooling its selected section to sub-ambient temperature. Analytes that might normally not be retained, can now be trapped. This refocussing within the cryo-trap will result in sharper peaks on your chromatogram.

Using the same technique as in the OPTIC instrument, the CryoFocus has a highly accurate and very fast heating ramp, up to 60°C/sec. The temperature range is limited to 350°C so that it can operate within the temperature limits of GC capillary columns. With a fast heating cryo-trap, better detection limit and better resolution can be seen on the detector.

The dosing of the liquid nitrogen to the trap is done using a valve. The sound made by such valve can be an intense presence in a laboratory. The latest CryoFocus update released includes a silent version of the valve, while improving control over the lower temperatures. The silent CryoFocus 4 upgrade is supplied with all new systems, but also available as an upgrade to your existing system. Another great example where GL Sciences upgrades their instruments not only to guarantee the highest quality, but to also provide the best user experience.

Real-Time Cloud-Native Lab Management System Monitoring

Waters Corporation has just unveiled waters_connect™ System Monitoring, a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) application designed to help laboratory managers and analysts monitor the real-time status of any chromatography instruments running on Waters™ Empower™ Software.

This cloud-native application is especially beneficial for high-volume quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) laboratories, as it can reduce the turnaround time of product release samples and provide an understanding of instrument history and usage levels.

“The pharmaceutical industry relies heavily on Empower Software to ensure that an uninterrupted supply of medicines reaches pharmacy shelves and the patients who need them,” said Dave Leitham, Vice President, Connected Science, Waters Corporation. “The ‘always-on’ waters_connect System Monitoring dashboard allows lab managers and analysts to check in on their instrument fleet from anywhere, anytime and helps them improve product release timelines and delivery schedules.”

The waters_connect System Monitoring application is now available in Europe and North America. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/Z4JB

Making Gas Chromatography more Affordable for Universities

Ellutia has always been dedicated to supporting the next generation of gas chromatographers through its partnerships with universities and academic institutions. Ellutia’s 200 series GC provides an affordable GC option for educational establishments. A recent case study available on the Ellutia website highlights the use of the 200 series GC at Cranfield University and Surrey University.

The original idea behind the 200 series GC was to create a compact, single-channel instrument for the education sector. The instrument had to be small and lightweight enough to be easily transported between classrooms or stored away when not in use, but still offer excellent chromatographic performance. When the first 200 series GCs were completed, it quickly became evident that the instrument’s capabilities were on par with much larger and more expensive systems. The ease of use and lower entry cost also make it ideal for laboratories starting GC analysis for the first time.

Ellutia recognises the value that analytical technologies can provide in developing the careers and skills of students in science and welcomes interest from educational establishments.
