23 Drug Discovery, Pharmaceuticals & Cannabis Testing Helping Pharma to Update their USP Methods
The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) has modernised a substantial number of existing monographs to include ion chromatography (IC) methods for numerous pharmaceutical assays of APIs as well as analysis of impurities and excipients. Metrohm has cooperated with USP in this project as a partner and several of these monographs have been validated with Metrohm instruments and columns.
USP has embarked on a global initiative to modernise many existing monographs across all compendia.
In this context, numerous titrations, ion measurements, and other wet chemistry methods have been substituted by IC methods validated with instruments and columns from Metrohm. As a result, companies from the pharmaceutical industry can now replace their current methods by more modern IC methods making their daily routine analytics safer and more efficient.
Companies eager to modernise their pharmaceutical analysis are supported by Metrohm in making this change all the way from consultation to implementation and method validation. A list of USP monographs validated with Metrohm IC instruments is available from a dedicated hub on the Metrohm website.

Revolutionising Viscosity Measurement
Kyoto Electronics Manufacturing (KEM) is excited about the EMS-1000S Viscometer because they are aware that it provides new measurement possibilities that many people desire. The EMS-1000S is one-of-a-kind in the viscometer market, as it measures viscosity by detecting the rotational speed of a spherical metal probe that is rotated in a sample through the use of the Lorentz force. The sample tubes used with the device can be autoclaved and hermetically sealed, and accommodate sample volumes down to 300μL, or 90μL with the non-autoclavable option.
Being able to autoclave the sample tube (and probe) helps prevent biological contamination and allows for sample reuse. You can hermetically seal tubes in a glove box to give you absolute control of the gaseous atmosphere that your sample is exposed to, important in maintaining anaerobic conditions for example. The low-volume measurement system is a godsend for users that can only spare small amounts of sample, and a dilution series can be performed in the same tube for concentration dependence of viscosity studies. The EMS-1000S is extremely user-friendly, just insert the tube, close the lid, and press start! Contact-free measurement means no clean-up and no mechanical breakdown caused by samples.
Many professionals in biotechnology, medical research, and materials science have found that the EMS-1000S provides them with viscosity measurement applications where previously there were none. Contact Kyoto Electronics Manufacturing today to find out how your samples can be measured.

Molecular distillation, also called high vacuum wiped fi lm, thin fi lm or short path distillation, is a well-known process to separate thermally sensitive material. Combined in a new unique construction with precise temperature control units, this allows high performance distillation for many different applications and products.
Hybrid construction for versatile and effi cient distillation
The SP 1000 CC from Pilodist GmbH is a turnkey system for laboratory use and small scale production. It is optimised to cover a wide range of applications, from high melting to high boiling points and can handle thermally sensitive material with full fl exibility and completely continuous operation.
Application cannabis Beside typical applications like fragrances, (pre-)polymers or reactive chemicals, cannabis is one of the main application areas for the SP 1000 CC, as both short path and molecular distillation are required for optimal results.
In the fi rst pass, the terpenes and light oils are distilled out at a pressure of ~1mbar abs. and an evaporator temperature of ~160°C. This light fraction is condensed at a glass cooling fi nger at ~30-40°C. Due to the chemical resistant dry running scroll pump, there is no risk of pump oil contamination in this step like in conventional rotary vane pumps of other systems.
The discharged residue fraction will be repassed to distil out the valuable cannabinoids and separate it from the tar-like waste fraction. This step is performed under high vacuum of 1x10-3 to 1x10-5 mbar and temperatures between 140-180°C. The cannabinoids like THC or CBD are condensed at temperatures between 60°C-80°C while the waste fraction with extremely high melting points is discharged tempered up to 200°C.
Due to the fully vacuum tight feed and discharge system, there is no limitation in the charge or receiver vessel size and the system can run in 24/7 operation without any interruption in the vacuum and a throughput up to 7l/h.
