42 Pipetting Solutions Aid Allergy Prevention Research
Researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden are using Integra Biosciences’ PIPETBOY pro pipette controllers with integrated LED lighting to study the physiological function of mast cells and their role in allergic reactions. Their ultimate aim is to develop novel vaccines and therapies to prevent and treat common allergies.
The incidence of atopic allergies – such as hay fever and asthma – has dramatically increased in the past 50 years, with up to 30% of people in some western countries experiencing severe symptoms requiring medical intervention. Mast cells have been found to induce strong inflammatory reactions in response to immunoglobulin E, prompting a team at the university’s Department of Cell and Molecular Biology to research the part they play in triggering the allergic response.
Dr Srinivas Akula, Postdoctoral Researcher in the department, said: “We use PIPETBOY pro pipette controllers for purifying and culturing mast cells. They are vital tools for all of our multiple workflows. We have used PIPETBOYs for over a decade now, and we’re extremely happy with their performance and reliability. They continually dispense highly accurate volumes, which is very important for robust and reliable experiments.”
Srinivas concluded: “We would like to extend our portfolio of Integra products in the future with the EVOLVE multichannel manual pipettes and ECO Rack GripTip pipette tips. This would further speed up our workflow and increase our capacity for mast cell culture, taking us even closer to an effective treatment for the potentially debilitating allergies suffered by millions worldwide.”

Compact Compressor Solution for Higher Air Demands
The Fini direct-drive compressors from FPS Air Compressors are now available in the UK. The range includes both the MiniCUBE and CUBE models, with the MiniCUBE being the most compact option in its market segment. The 2.2kW model is available as a single-phase solution if desired. For higher air demands, the CUBE is an excellent option, with models available up to 7.5 kW. The CUBE can replace a piston compressor directly and can produce 30-35% more output.
Although small in size, the MiniCUBE offers significant advantages by providing compressed air for a wide range of pneumatic devices. The unique 1:1 direct drive system eliminates the need for belts, gears, pulleys, or couplings, thus reducing maintenance and avoiding tension or misalignment issues.
The MiniCUBE offers the same power as a screw compressor and is available in both three-phase (400 V) and single-phase (240 V) variants. The three-phase model is equipped with an IE3 energy efficiency class motor. This compact compressor has a footprint of less than 1m3 and operates very quietly, making it suitable for placement in any operating environment. Additionally, the MiniCUBE is surprisingly affordable, despite having features such as a shock-resistant thermoformed protective cover, intake regulator, and ‘LOGIN Basic’ multi-function controller.
The CUBE shares all the same features as the MiniCUBE. Additionally, it includes an ETMII controller with a backlit multi-function display. This controller has several noteworthy features, including four maintenance timers for the air filter, oil, oil filter, and separator filter. The cooling fan temperature is also programmable, and it comes with programmable remote control starting.
The CUBE compressor is a heavy-duty machine that can operate continuously under the most severe conditions of use. Additionally, the ‘ES’ version comes with a refrigerated dryer that is completely enclosed within the main cabinet while retaining the same shape and dimensions as the standard machine.
The MiniCUBE and CUBE are available in floor-mounted models with either powder-coated or galvanised tanks, and come in a range of sizes.
The CUBE and MiniCUBE are both plug-and-play systems that come ready for use and include RotarECOFLUID mineral oil. The compressors operate at a high level of efficiency, produce low noise levels of just 65 dB(A) and come with a three-year warranty. More information online:

Flow Sensing Challenges in Food and Beverage Production
Titan Enterprises offers a range of high-performance flowmeters in food grade materials where both food hygiene and precision flow measurement are required.
“The physical properties of the liquids themselves lend additional complexities to the choice of flow measuring equipment,” says Neil Hannay, Senior Development Engineer at Titan Enterprises. “Consideration of whether the liquid is viscous, volatile, corrosive, flammable, or contaminated with particles, for example, or needs to be maintained at a high temperature, are key factors in deciding a suitable flow meter.”
Flow monitoring of high viscosity liquids, such as cooking oils, sauces and syrups (e.g. syrup injections in beverage lines) require devices such as Titan’s oval gear flowmeters, which provide highly accurate flow measurement. Unlike other flowmeters, measurement accuracy of oval gear flowmeters improves as the liquid viscosity increases, from a nominal 1% to around 0.1% of flow rate at higher viscosities.
Whereas for low viscosity liquids such as water, beer, wine and spirits, Titan’s NSF-approved 800-series and beverage flowmeters provide a low-cost drink dispensing solution. Designed to give high performance over 6 flow ranges from 0.05 to 15 l/min, these devices have totally non-metallic NSF-approved wetted components making them ideally suited for applications where both food hygiene and precision flow measurement are required.
In processes where ingredients need to be maintained at high temperatures – chocolate for example – a flowmeter designed for applications requiring precise flow measurement at elevated temperatures would be needed. Capable of operating up to 110°C, Titan’s inline non-invasive Atrato®

Thermo Fisher Scientific is committed to promoting sustainability in the lab, and has launched Invitrogen DynaGreen Magnetic Beads to achieve this goal. These highly magnetic submicron beads are designed to be more environmentally friendly, and are the first in a line of green DynaGreen solutions. The innovative, microplastic-free beads are a step forward in reducing waste in molecular biology research.
With a legacy of 30 years of quality and innovation, Invitrogen DynaGreen Magnetic Beads provide researchers with a way to lower their environmental impact during protein purification. The sub-micron bead size offers increased target capture surface area and a low sedimentation rate, enabling efficient target protein isolation in just 80 minutes or less through a simple bind-incubate-wash-elute IP protocol without pre-clearing. These beads deliver comparable or better performance than the industry standard while promoting sustainability.
Streamline your protein purification process with Invitrogen DynaGreen Magnetic Beads, which are compatible with any instrument in the KingFisher family for reduced hands-on time and reduced risk of manual errors. Automation with the DynaGreen beads ensures efficient and accurate results.
Invitrogen DynaGreen Magnetic Beads are designed with sustainability in mind, adhering to the European Commission’s proposal to restrict the use of microplastics and following the twelve principles of green chemistry. The beads are manufactured using biorenewable solvents and a streamlined process, reducing their environmental impact and energy usage. To further minimize waste, the beads are packaged in recyclable plastics and shipped at room temperature.
