49 Safety, Hazard Containment & Sterilising Equipment New Range of Absorbents Protects Against Laboratory Spillages
Scharlab is pleased to announce our new range of Scharlau absorbents against unexpected laboratory spillages: Chemispill®. These products have a high absorption power and great neutralisation capacity.
Chemispill® Sorb: a highly absorbent, versatile and very low-density solid. Each package contains 400 g of material and is able to absorb more than 3.5 litres of organic spillages, leaving no residual marks or dusty residues.
Chemispill® H+: a highly absorbent pale-yellow material, with great capacity to neutralise acids. The colour shifts from red (acid) to yellow (neutral) to clearly visualise the complete neutralisation of the acid spillage. Each package contains 2 Kg of solid capable of efficiently neutralising any kind of concentrated acid. The indicator does not contain phenolphthalein.
Chemispill® OH-: a highly absorbent reddish solid, with high capacity to neutralise alkali spillages. The colour shifts from blue (alkali) to yellow (neutral) to clearly visualise the complete neutralisation of the spillage. Each package contains 2 Kg of material capable of efficiently neutralising any kind of alkali. The indicator does not contain phenolphthalein.

Air Science has introduced a selection of mail handling fume hoods designed to improve user safety in handling and screening of envelopes and packages.
Despite shipping regulations, fentanyl and other substances that are harmful when ingested, inhaled or absorbed are often sent, both legally and illegally, via mail. In addition to potential attacks through the shipment of anthrax and explosives, the shipment of fentanyl, drugs and pharmaceuticals puts mail handlers at risk when packaging is compromised.
The Purair SafeSEARCH complies with best practices recommended by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS). DHS recommends that handling and opening of mail be done in filtered exhaust hoods or containment receptacles as an added layer of protection.
SafeSEARCH reduces the risk of releasing chemical vapours and harmful particulates (like synthetic opioids, anthrax, etc.) into the environment. The ductless technology is energy efficient and does not put additional strain on existing facility HVAC systems and the design eliminates HVAC construction and saves on utility costs. The cabinet design eliminates bypass leakage that could blow back to the operator and electronic monitoring ensures
continued performance and safety. HEPA/ULPA filters provide additional safety layer against biological.
The Purair SafeSEARCH is easily installed in existing or new facilities without HVAC changes. Standard sized turnkey models are self-contained, selected models are portable.
48665pr@reply-direct.com New Tall Cupboards Elevate Hygiene Levels
Teknomek has introduced a new range of cupboards developed with time and risk in mind. The robust units are designed to fit into SOP and reduce cleaning times, whilst eliminating trap points where dirt and contaminants could build up.
Sue Springett, Teknomek’s commercial manager, explained: “Hygiene best practice dictates that every piece of furniture is regularly and thoroughly cleaned down. The longer each item takes to clean, the more time – and thus money – is spent.
“If an item is fiddly or prevents easy access, the total cost of ownership simply grows with each passing year. Intelligent hygienic design reduces risk and improves cleaning efficiencies; this thinking guides the development of all our products - the new cupboards are a great case in point.”
The ground clearance on each of the units has been increased to 30cm, making it easier to clean the base and the floor beneath. The hygienic design continues underneath, featuring straight edges on three sides removing harbourage risk and speeding up cleaning times.
Up above, sloping tops are standard, using gravity to help reduce risk. This also reinforces hygiene culture by discouraging users from placing items on top that may collect dust.
Inside, shelves sit on easy clean rods, which can be added as required to create the right storage configuration, options include wire for improved air circulation. All shelving is slightly tilted to ensure liquids will run off after cleaning with drainage holes in the base of the cupboards to reduce the risk of water pooling.
The range offers a breadth of choice to suit storage requirements. Manufactured in the UK, bespoke sizes are also available on request and the cupboards can be constructed with 316 grade stainless steel if required.

Awareness is the Key that Unlocks Increased Safety in the Lab
You may not be able to detect chemical emissions in your lab, but Erlab’s Halo Sense can. The Halo Sense is a small, portable unit that monitors the air quality in your lab to detect a broad-range of VOCs or acids at the source (a formaldehyde version is also available). If chemical emissions are detected, the light will pulse with an audible alarm so that you can take the next steps to ensure your safety.
