HPLC 2019 - Milan: June
The 48th International Symposium on High Performance Liquid Phase Separations and Related Techniques will be held for the fi rst time in Italy, from 16 - 20 June 2019 in Milan, at the Milano-Bicocca University.
Covering both fundamental and practical aspects of Separation Science, particular emphasis will be given to hyphenated techniques, most importantly liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), design and characterisation of stationary phases, micro- and nano-fl uidics, supercritical fl uid chromatography (SFC), capillary electrophoresis (CE) and their applications in proteomics, metabolomics, food analysis, characterisation of biopharmaceuticals and biosimilars. HPLC 2019 will also feature some unique highlights, such as a session entirely dedicated to HPLC for process analytical technology (PAT) and quality assessment in preparative chromatography and one
focusing on HP-TLC. The complete list of topics can be found on the website.
Lower student fees are offered, along with special packages for students to attend short courses taught by highly reputed experts. There will be 14 short courses on different topics, descriptions can be found online.

Denmark Celebrates Centre for Particle Therapy Treatments
The Danish Center for Particle Therapy (DCPT) at Aarhus University Hospital, was offi cially opened at the end of February by the Regional Council of Central Denmark Region, Anders Kühnau and attended by both the Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and the Chairman of the A.P. Møller Foundation, Ane Maersk Mc- Kinney Ugglaa. The DKK800 million centre, equipped by Varian, is a three-treatment-room facility, housing a proton therapy system which has already begun patient treatments.

Funded by both the private and public sectors, the centre received a signifi cant donation of DKK250 million towards costs of the medical equipment from the Møller Foundation. “The foundation has a good tradition for supporting medical science, but we have never previously made such a large grant for a single piece of equipment,” said Ane Uggla, Chair of the Møller Foundation. “We respect the level of scientifi c knowledge in Aarhus. The team around the National Centre for Particle Radiotherapy are very capable and we’ve found the project management to be inordinately sure-handed.”
“We are very pleased with our partnership with Varian on the installation and implementation of the ProBeam system and the ARIA® oncology information management and Eclipse™ treatment planning software,” said Professor Morten Høyer, Medical Director

at DCPT. “Since treating our fi rst patient for a brain tumour, we were quickly able to begin treatments for fi ve other brain tumour patients. We have used all the relevant capabilities of the system from the fi rst day of operation, including multi-fi eld optimisation, robust optimisation and cone-beam imaging. In April, our second treatment room will be operational and the extra capacity will allow for treatment of other diagnoses like head and neck cancer, paediatric cancers and breast cancer.”
In Europe, ProBeam systems are already in clinical use in Germany, Switzerland, Russia, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
SLS Opens New Office in Kenya
Scientifi c laboratory Supplies (SLS) has shown its commitment to the East African laboratory market by opening up a new offi ce in Nairobi, Kenya.
SLS recognises the importance of the laboratory market in East Africa which plays home to some of the world’s leading institutes involved in agriculture, food and medical research. SLS is working closely with a number of these research institutes including HJF Medical Research International, International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, International Rice Institute and Makerere MRC Uganda.
After serving this market, from the UK for several years, SLS believe they can better support their customers in this part of the world with reliable and locally based sales, service and support - customer centricity is at the heart of SLS Kenya. Nairobi was a natural choice of location for the offi ce due to many pan African research institutions having headquarters in Nairobi. Frequent transport and cargo connections assist SLS in providing the
highest level of logistical service to their customers.
Stephen Mellor, Sales Director for SLS Kenya has a wealth of experience in the East African laboratory market and is responsible for setting the offi ces up along with Benedict Malingu, Technical Director SLS Kenya. Benedict is highly familiar with this market as he ran his own business in lab equipment servicing and supply for several years. His local knowledge coupled with years of technical experience will enable SLS to provide industry leading levels of customer support.
Ian Roulstone, Sales Director SLS commented: “We are incredibly excited to establish a direct presence in such a vibrant and growing market. Our international presence is enhanced by the establishment of this offi ce and we look forward to growing our East African business whilst further extending our global reach and presence.”
Stephen Mellor, Sales Director SLS - Kenya added: “The Kenyan market, in particular Nairobi, is alive with the research
