34 Gas Detection Catalytic Sensor Detects Incomplete Combustion in Boiler Stacks

Nemoto Sensor Engineering Co. Ltd (Japan) has developed a catalytic gas sensor designed to continually monitor for excessive levels of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the flues of residential water heating boilers. The NAP-79A sensor works with a special circuit which allows the sensor to work effectively and continuously across a very wide temperature range, up to 260ºC. The sensor can therefore be mounted directly in the flue.

In the event of a fault resulting in incomplete combustion caused by, for example, a partially blocked flue, higher levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2) become present in the flue. High levels of these gases in the flue is a potential safety hazard, and also indicates that the boiler is working at lower than normal

efficiency. The NAP-79A works in conjunction with the software of the boiler to provide an alert when the levels of CO and H2 exceed safe or efficient levels, to facilitate an automatic shutdown of the boiler and/or flag the owner that maintenance is required.

This technique is widely and successfully used by manufacturers of residential water heaters in Japan, and can now also be used in Europe to comply with the continuous monitoring aspects of European standards for water heating boilers.

26786pr@reply-direct.com Environmentally Bulletproof Toxic Gas Detector

Detcon (USA), an IST Company, is pleased to announce that its environmentally bulletproof DM-700 toxic gas detector is now certified SIL 2 capable. The device recently underwent stringent functional safety assessments by third party agency exida and was found to be in compliance with IEC61508 : 2010 Parts 1-7.

The Model 700’s rugged framework includes an electro-polished 316 stainless steel housing with fully encapsulated electronics and dual layer surge protection. These details in design virtually eliminate the threat of outside damage to internal components due to water ingress, corrosion, vibration and transient spikes.

Sensor elements are simple smart plug-in components for easy replacement in the field while operator interface is user friendly via a small handheld magnet. Configuration and routine calibration are intuitive and menu driven with fully scripted instructions. The intelligent transmitter module features dual redundant outputs; a linear 4-20 milliamp analog signal and a Modbus RS-485 serial output. Product options include a Remote Alarm Module (RAM), HART, Foundation Fieldbus, and wireless. Additional approvals include CE, ATEX, CSA, CEPEL and GOST.

Oldham (France), recently announced the launch of the second generation of its successful iTrans product – the iTrans 2 fixed gas monitor for the detection of explosive gases, toxic gases or oxygen. With CSA and NEPSI approvals, the iTrans 2 is available for sale in the Americas and Asia-Pacific regions. It is anticipated that ATEX and IECEx will be received by September 2013, and GOST and InMetro approvals will follow shortly thereafter.

The iTrans 2 employs an intelligent electronics platform to provide one or two points of detection from a single head for maximum flexibility, superior performance and lower installation costs. When in RS485 bus configuration, one system is capable of accommodating more than 200 transmitters and can monitor any combination of gases for a specific environment.

New Guide to Gas Detection Published

A new independent Guide to Gas Detection has been published by CoGDEM (The Council of Gas Detection and Environmental Monitoring) to provide industry professionals with a complete reference document on the accurate, reliable measurement of gas concentrations in both process control and occupational safety applications.

This book provides the latest information on UK, EU and global regulations, guidance on flammable, toxic and asphyxiant gases, workplace safety, gas detection requirements, sensor technologies, calibration and performance evaluation.

“There is an emphasis on providing practical guidance throughout this book. For example, a quick reference guide explains the key issues in gas detection system selection, this book will be essential reading for anyone with a professional interest in gas detection.”
