Water/Wastewater 9 Raising Alarms on the Density of Sludge on a Settlement Tank

The treatment of sewage, wastewater and water has been transformed into a clean and efficient operation in mid-Wales and the Midlands thanks to a suite of portable Sludge Blanket Detectors which have been supplied to Severn Trent Water by Partech Instruments (UK).

Following the largest order in Partech’s 49 year history for this type of product, 450 units of the market leading SludgeWatch715 Sludge Blanket Detector are now in use across the Severn Trent Water network. By using this portable sensor which raises an alarm when the density of a sludge blanket on a settlement tank reaches a certain level, the SludgeWatch 715 Sludge Blanket Detector offers quick, safe and accurate monitoring.

The SludgeWatch 715 replaces the Sludge Judge product which is reliant on an operative physically pushing a long column which is filled with contaminated water into the settlement tank to produce a manual measurement of the sludge blanket. This is subject to numerous health and safety issues; as well as the risk associated with handling contaminated water, the restricted space available on settlement tank bridges makes manoeuvring a long awkward column hazardous.

Anthony Kyriacou, Technical Services Manager, comments: “The SludgeWatch 715 Sludge Blanket Detector has been successfully rolled out across our network area bringing a number of benefits to our operations; operator risk has been minimised, accuracy has improved and time efficiency has been exponential. All our operators need to do is give the sensor a quick wipe when the tank has been dipped and the measurement itself is done in seconds. Also, this investment has ensured that we measure sludge depth in a standard and consistent way across all of our wastewater treatment sites”.

Sales Director of Partech Instruments, Angus Fosten, adds: “We are delighted to be part of the Severn Trent Water network and to facilitate improvements in water treatment quality across mid-Wales and the Midlands. We have worked with Severn Trent Water every step of the way, from carrying out site visits to ensure sensor compatibility, to installing and optimising use.”

Water Quality Instrumentation and Gas Detectors on Display at Aquatech

Analytical Technology (UK), a specialist provider of water quality instrumentation and toxic and combustible gas detectors, will be supporting their Dutch, distributors Interline, at Aquatech this November. The company has its own booth, 02.501, situated closely to their partners. The distributors will have on display a wide range of ATi’s continuous, online analysers including: pH, residual chlorine, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, ammonia and much more. Working in a wide variety of industries such as Pharmaceutical, Food and Beverage, Water and Waste Water, Petrochemical and various others, ATi are hoping to meet new representatives who will share the same, service lead values throughout Europe. ATi hope to expand its presence, and of course take the opportunity to meet with existing customers.

New Pressure Switch: More Operator Convenience through Adjustment Knob

Wika (Germany) has expanded its new series of OEM pressure switches by a model with increased operator convenience. Using an adjustment knob, the switch point for model PSM03 can be set continuously.

The new compact instrument enables the user to choose between two process connections - mounting thread or flange. In addition to the increased installation flexibility, the pressure switch has a long service life: Model PSM03 is designed for at least five million switching cycles.

Just like in the models PSM01 and 02, the core of the instrument is a flicker-free snap-action switch. It allows for high precision with a reproducibility of ±2 % of the full scale value in the measuring ranges 0.2 ... 2 bar to 40 ... 400 bar. WIKA delivers the three universally usable OEM pressure switches with a factory-set switch point on request.

AW-Lake Company (USA), specialist manufacturer and distributor of flow meter products, is pleased to announce the new MX 9000 Process Monitor. This new all-in-one monitor can monitor flow rate, total, limit, batch and ratio measurements. In addition to flow rate readings, the MX 9000 can also report pressure, temperature, and information from other devices with analogue signals that can be monitored.

This AW-Lake design anticipates future needs, using a modular approach leading to flexibility and expandability. New plug in option boards, backlit display with colour-coded indicator, and a USB port provide the technological factors needed for the high performance of tomorrow.

The backlit display boasts three back light options - red, green and blue. This colour-coded display also serves as an indicator for alarm conditions so problems can be seen at a distance without any knowledge of set points. The display board also contains a graphic LCD module with 4 push buttons for changing display modes and programming variables

An option board slot will allow for such features as relay outputs, networking, voltage/current inputs, frequency output, 2nd isolated current loop, and 120/240VAC input power. Expansion board designs can be customer driven for special projects or application. There will also be a future option for HART Communications.
