24 Portable / Field Testing Portable Methane Detector for Emissions Mapping
As one of the UK’s specialist independent providers of emission and pollution monitoring, control and management services, enitial required a portable methane detector that would be efficient at recording and storing very detailed data. Following an increasing demand for emissions mapping surveys to be carried out from their customers, particularly those concerned with the anticipated change to Environment Agency guidance on surface emissions surveys, enitial identified that the TDL-500 would be best suited to their needs.
enitial is currently using the TDL-500 to measure methane concentrations from the surface on a 5m to 10m grid, recording data at 3 to 4 second intervals. The TDL-500’s data logging capabilities combined with Geotech’s (UK) software, which can provide up to 1,200 surface readings per hour, has allowed for a far greater level of detail in enitial’s emissions mapping surveys. Furthermore, the ATEX certified TDL-500 has allowed enitial to survey sensitive landfill areas where previously expensive hired equipment would have been required.
Having used the TDL-500 for a number of months, John Freestone from enitial commented “I am impressed by the accuracy and data collection rates of the TDL-500 and Geotech software package. I particularly like the ability to upload ESRI Shape Files to Geotech’s software as these can then be used to navigate on site and track the survey route; reducing the need for any paperwork or drawings on site, just a TDL-500 and PDA are required”.
Using laser spectroscopy technology, the TDL-500 is a high performance methane detector offering total selectivity to methane and sensitivity of 1ppm. The instrument offers ATEX certification and makes it possible to detect methane leaks and determine their location with precision. An enidata PDA is used with the TDL-500 to provide a continuous log of GPS coordinates and methane analysis, ideal for emissions mapping.

26708pr@reply-direct.com Discharge Measurement in Flood Situation
The latest product release of Sommer GmbH (Austria) sets a new milestone in hydrography. The RP-30 is a radar velocity profiler, which allows quick measuring of the surface velocity in rivers, canals and streams, even in flood condition.
Up to now hydrologists have to rely on their extrapolated rating curves to determine the discharge of a river in a flood event. No conventional velocity sensor which is in contact with the water, can be used in case of turbulent and high flow situations.
The RP-30 is a portable radar velocity sensor, specially developed for hydrological purpose. It can be safely operated from a bridge or on a cable way. As it is not in contact with the water, the RP-30 delivers reliable velocity information even in high flow situation, where no other equipment e.g. a flow meter, can be used.
The velocity spectrum is automatically transmitted via Bluetooth from the RP-30 to the laptop which runs the software “RPCommander”. With a complex hydraulic model, which is based on the theory of Manning and Strickler, the measured surface velocity is converted into the mean velocity. Knowing the cross section and the water level, the discharge is automatically calculated.
The portable RP-30 radar velocity profiler is the ideal tool for hydrologists to quickly determine the discharge of rivers or canals. With the ability to measure the velocity in turbulent and high flow situation the RP-30 is the perfect addition to conventional tools like the flow meter.

26888pr@reply-direct.com Spectrometers Enable Field Application
A pair of super-lightweight miniature spectrometers from Ocean Optics (Netherlands) is helping researchers investigate plant parameters in a verdant patch of New Zealand grassland. The compact STS model spectrometers, one deployed as a ground unit and the other aboard an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), are making synchronised hyperspectral measurements of barley and sugar beet crops to assess plant characteristics for more effective crop management.
A multinational team of researchers from Germany, Italy, Spain and New Zealand developed the UAV-based system and conducted the initial experiments, gathering high-resolution reflectance spectra from the UAV at altitudes of up to 200 meters and irradiance spectra from the ground-based spectrometer. According to team leader Andreas Burkart of the Research Center Jülich IBG-2 Plant Sciences, Germany, collection of hyperspectral data by field spectroscopy is a time-consuming task and often is restricted to easily accessible areas.
The small size and weight of the STS spectrometer is ideal for use on the UAV, which allows a series of fast and reproducible measurements over any terrain, even forest or marsh. By measuring various segments across a section of the New Zealand pastureland, the system was able to assess information such as specific plots that contained live vegetation.
The STS is a remarkably small CMOS detector-based spectrometer that is less than 2 inches square (40 mm x 42 mm) and weighs a little over 2 ounces (68 g). It performs comparably to larger systems, providing full spectral analysis with low stray light, high signal to noise (>1500:1) and excellent optical resolution. For the application described here, the researchers were able to match the performance of the STS to that of a larger, more expensive commercially available field portable spectrometer, with optical resolution of ~2.5 nm (FWHM).
