MCERTS Expanded to Environmental Monitoring Data Management Systems
The Monitoring Certification Scheme (MCERTS) was expanded in 2009 to incorporate Environmental Monitoring Data Management Systems. It is unique, in that its rigorous requirements ensure that product development meets high standards.
The standard covers the following: As in ISO9001 procedures must be in place to ensure quality throughout product development and provision; Software development and testing must be to established professional standards; Functionality is audited to ensure it is appropriate for its’ intended application; Security and auditability must be ensured; Safeguards must be implemented for code availability in the event of the provider being unable to support the product.
Adopting an MCERTS certified system therefore gives both operators regulators confidence that data is managed professionally, securely and using best practice.
Other advantages of such a system are time saving through automation and better understanding through interpretation tools typically included in such a package.
EHS Data’s (UK) Monitor-Pro software achieved MCERTS accreditation in 2009 and was the first generic Monitoring Data Management System to attain the rigorous standard.
MCERTS standards around the security of data and the requirement to provide a full and pervasive audit trail that gives complete confidence in the ability of the system and the data it collects.

Environmental
Monitoring Specialist Allows Effluent Sampling Under MCERTS Scheme
Environmental monitoring specialist, enitial (UK), is one of the few sampling companies in the UK allowed to deliver effluent sampling under the Environment Agency's monitoring certifications scheme (MCERTS).
The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) awards the MCERTS standard to organisations who can prove they are able to provide a consistently high quality sampling service, giving the Environment Agency confidence in their sampling of untreated and treated sewage effluents and trade effluents.
Ivor Parry, business development director at enitial said: "enitial is always striving to provide a high quality service. Receiving this accreditation means our technicians can deliver monitoring services to water utility sites that are subject to permits requiring Operator Self Monitoring (OSM). It's a requirement for many water companies as the Environment Agency uses the results to determine how well a company complies with its permit conditions".
After an extensive audit, enitial was awarded accreditation to ISO/IES 17025:2005 and the Environment Agency's MCERTS Performance Standard for organisations undertaking sampling and chemical testing of water for the sampling of untreated and treated sewage effluents and trade effluents.

The Importance of Personal Development in the Field of Environmental Monitoring and MCERTS
In the current economic climate, expenditure by organisations on training has suffered a downturn. It is viewed by many that training is non-essential, and the focus is on maintaining profit margins.
However, continual improvement of staff understanding and knowledge within the areas they work should increase productivity and motivation. Plant owners also have a responsibility to ensure their staff are kept up-to-date with latest technical guidance and requirements.
With the growing acceptance of the MCERTS schemes in the UK, Europe and further afield, it is now more important than ever that manufacturers, process operators and stack-emission monitoring personnel are kept fully abreast of changes to legislation and policy.
CSA Group-Sira, the MCERTS Certification provider, offers a range of training courses covering the various regulatory requirements for environmental monitoring, including:
