32 Water/Wastewater New Process Training Unit Opened in Philadelphia, PA
Process Training Unit (PTU) is a fully functional “mini process plant” featuring Endress+Hauser (USA) Instruments and the Rockwell Automation PlantPAx process automation system.
Endress+Hauser and Rockwell Automation announce the opening of a new Process Training Unit (PTU) in Philadelphia, PA. The Process Training Unit features Endress+Hauser instruments and the Rockwell Automation PlantPAx process automation system designed for the purpose of educating field technicians, engineers, and sales personnel. The PTU provides a unique learning experience through hands-on activities. Participants learn the application, installation, operation and diagnostic procedures related to many types of process instrumentation and control processes. Various communication protocols are also demonstrated including: EtherNet/IP, HART, PROFIBUS PA, and FOUNDATION Fieldbus.
The first unit includes numerous fully functional flow, pressure, temperature, level and analysis instruments. The Rockwell Automation PlantPAx system regulates the flow paths and velocity of the process by actuating control valves and adjusting the speed of pump drives. It also provides operators with a real time view of the process and continuous monitoring of critical parameters.
The second unit simulates the types of processes and procedures found in the Life Sciences industries. In this unit, analytical instrumentation measures the pH, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and optical density which give a picture of the health of the cells and the effectiveness of the cleaning processes within the bioreactor. The controls of the bioreactor are implemented with the Rockwell Automation ControlLogix™ PAC and PlantPAx system.
Lastly, the PTU includes a demo unit that simulates environmental, water and wastewater treatment applications. The system uses common additives to simulate the same type of conditions found in environmental monitoring and water/wastewater treatment applications.
The PTU includes over 5,000 square feet of classroom and hands-on training space.
Other PTUs are located at La Porte (Houston), TX; Memphis, TN; Mobile, Alabama; Matthews, NC; and Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, with additional units being planned around the U.S.

Solinst (Canada) is pleased to announce the launch of their newly redesigned Model 107 TLC Meter. The TLC Meter features the recently developed Solinst laser-marked PVDF flat tape, allowing the new TLC to be supplied in lengths up to 1000 ft. (300 m).
The new Solinst flat tape is made of extremely durable PVDF with accurate laser markings every 1/100 ft. or each millimeter, certified traceable to National Standards. The tape features increased abrasion resistance, tensile strength, and electrical efficiency with the use of 6 strands of copper coated steel and 13 strands of stainless steel in each conductor. The enhanced dog-bone shape reduces adherence to well casing.
The TLC Meter provides accurate, stable conductivity and corresponding temperature measurements, displayed on a convenient rotating LCD display for easy viewing. The 3/4" (19 mm) diameter probe measures conductivity that has been standardised to 25°C, i.e. Specific Conductance (displayed as EC). Conductivity measurements are read from 0-80,000 µS/cm with readings giving accuracy of 5% of reading or 100 µS (which ever is greater).
Durability, sturdy construction, and the easy-to-use Solinst reel make it ideal and cost-effective for use in the field. A standard 9V alkaline battery, which provides 90 hours operation, is located in an easy-access drawer in the reel, and electronics have an auto-off after 8 minutes. Optional user calibration is simple, with a single, or up to four point calibration option.
The TLC meter is excellent for profiling temperature and conductivity in wells and open water. It is ideal for saltwater intrusion investigations, tracer tests, road salt studies, and a general indication of contamination levels, which can provide early warnings of changes in water quality.

In the past decade the requirements on many measurements are growing due to the need for optimisation of the development and production, or the legislation due to legal documentation. Since the oxygen concentration is one of the most important parameters in many chemical and biochemical reactions, the sensor industry is implementing new ways to measure O2.
The principle of fluorescence quenching also known as “optical oxygen measurement” has many advantages compared to the classical methods – no oxygen consumption, no need for
electrolytes, great long term stability, no cross sensitivity to CO2, H2S and no influence by the flow of the media. A serious disadvantage of the optical O2 sensors as a relatively new technology, is the price. However now with the price under 1000
EUR, low maintenance cost and ease of use, many laboratories and field environmentalists are going “optical” with the getOtwo LAB L3209 WA from GetAMO (Bulgaria). With its 12 mm POM shaft it is directly usable in the fixtures of the electrochemical sensor. The USB interface (no transmitter needed) and user friendly PC software are an easy way to log and evaluate data in both mobile and stationed labs.

The USEPA Administrator recently signed a Method Update Rule (MUR) approving new methods for analysis of NPDES wastewater samples. Six ASTM methods covering sampling, preservation and analysis of free, available and total cyanide are included in the MUR.
USEPA approval of ASTM D 7511-09e2 allows labs to analyse samples for total cyanide without a preliminary 2-hour acid distillation step. OI Analytical’s (USA) CNSolution 3100 Cyanide Analyser uses in-line UV digestion to dissociate metal-cyanide complexes and measure total cyanide in minutes by ASTM D 7511-09e2.
