Gas Detection New Portable FTIR Gas Analyser Detects Almost Any Gas
Gasmet Technologies Oy (Finland) has announced the launch of the DX4040 – a portable FTIR gas analyser that enables the field measurement of literally thousands of gases. The DX4040 is the second generation of the world’s first truly portable FTIR analyser which brought laboratory grade gas analysis into the field, and thereby brought the benefits of multiparameter FTIR gas analysis to monitoring applications involving industrial safety, medical gases, fumigants/pesticides, soil gas, contaminated land, first responders/hazmat, fire investigation, toxic industrial chemicals, chemical warfare agents and many others.
The new instrument is easier to use and more flexible than its predecessor. However, Gasmet CEO Mikko Suuntala says: "The most important development lies in the ability of the device to identify unknown gases in the field (at the touch of one button) when using a new version of the unit's Calcmet software on a Windows tablet pc."
Users of the DX4040's predecessor will be pleased to learn that the unknown gas identification capability is retrospectively applicable to existing DX4030 analysers when using the new software and a tablet PC.
The Calcmet Pro software makes it possible to retrospectively identify almost any gas from the recorded spectra. However, for those users investigating known species the unit can be used with a handheld Bluetooth PDA running Calcmet Lite and incorporating a 3G modem, camera and GPS so that time and location are assigned to each analysis. Using the DX4040 with a PDA is a popular choice because it enables the simultaneous display, in almost real-time, of up to 25 gases.
Summarising the benefits of the DX4040 Mikko Suuntala says: “This instrument is unique; it is able to identify both organic and inorganic compounds, whilst also storing sample spectra for post-measurement analysis using a chemical library of over 5000 compounds. There are no sensors that might need future replacement and operation is extremely easy; no sample preparation is required and calibration is simply a zero check with nitrogen or air.”

Axetris (Switzerland) mass flow meter and controller persuade with a high dynamic range and a turn down ratio from 500 to more than 1000. Actual standard products on the market are, in the most cases, limited to turn down ratios of less than 100:1.
A high dynamic range gives OEM customers a real competitive advantage. This was re-cently confirmed by a leading manufacturer of analytical instruments (Gas Chromatog-raphy), who replaced its complete line of conventional MFC’s with Axetris high perfor-mance MFC’s.
In addition it offers OEM customers significant cost reduction potential if different gas and flow ranges can be combined into one single mass flow controller, there by replacing sev-eral conventional mass flow controllers. Besides the ultra compact meter and controller modules designed for system integration, complete stand alone mass flow meters and controllers are offered. Last but not least Axetris manufactures completely customised gas control systems for multi channel gas mixers and gas splitters All types are multi-gas and multi-range capable. The excellent accuracy and repeatability and the fast reaction time of the MEMS based sensing element allows for fast and precise control of
the gas flows, even then when disturbance variables are present (for example pressure pulses). The products are available for Air, N2, O2, Ar, CO2, He, H2 and for flow rates from 10 to 3’000 sccm (full scale, N2 equivalent). The following interfaces are supported: 0..5 V, 0…4 mA, RS232 TTL, RS 232 EIA, RS485
Special calibration sets are available for the most common applications such as leak test-ing, gas chromatography, thermal analysis, bioreactors, thin film, sputtering, CO2 gas la-sers control and more. Reader Reply Card No. Stand Alone Gas Detector
The Gas Point from Recom(Italy) is an economical, microprocessor-based gas detector for continuous monitoring of toxic gases, oxygen or inflammable gases. Non intrusive calibration and maintenance is performed using a magnetic wand to access the software through the enclosure window – no need to open the enclosure (and obtain special area permits) to perform routine calibrations.
The backlight LCD graphic display shows the gas reading, with wide and visible numbers, together with the measure unit and the gas name.
High sensitivity, long term stability and no false alarms are the hallmark of the new and improved sensors. Fastest response to the target gas combined with minimal interference buy other gases or environmental influences as well as the sensor life-time determine the reliability and the operating cost of a system. Moreover, Gas Point has an analogue 4-20 mA output, for remote control or to transmit the alarm signal. Integrated control on the power supply assures correct working in the case of unstable voltages.

Supply Expansion of Disposable Cylinders for Gas Analysis
Air Products (USA) is expanding its supply of disposable, non- refillable cylinders to provide a more convenient gas product for use in gas analysis.
While non-refillable gas cylinders have been available to specialty gas users for some time, Air Products has decided to expand its supply of these products in order to meet demand for applications where ease of use and portability are critical.
Switching to non-refillable cylinders for low volume applications allows gas users to avoid rental charges when using smaller volumes
of gas and benefit from speedy delivery of a wide range of standardised mixtures. These mixtures have been developed specifically for use in gas detection and other specialist laboratory applications.
Non-refillable gas products are available in a range of aluminium cylinder types, with capacities ranging from 12 litres up to 100 litres and they are supplied with a Certificate of Analysis. Utilising Air Products’ extensive cylinder-filling expertise, all reactive mixtures are guaranteed to provide long-term stability and non-reactive mixtures are batch-certified, ensuring consistency with the source gas.
According to Gary Yates, non-refillable gas products can provide much more than just enhanced convenience, they can bring significant safety benefits too. He said: “The International Safety Equipment Association recommends that gas detection equipment should be ‘bump’ tested prior to each day of use or before each confined space entry in order to check that sensors and alarms are operating properly. Stable non-refillable gas products that come with a Certificate of Analysis are ideal for this purpose.”
