30 Water/Wastewater
WWEM 2012 Workshop Programme Announced
New On-line TOC Analyser Videos
GE Analytical Instruments (USA) has developed two short overview videos for the Sievers InnovOx On-Line and Laboratory Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Analysers. The InnovOx (short for “Innovative Oxidation” technology) is designed for the industrial wastewater, environmental, and process water industries, and uses a patented technology, Supercritical Water Oxidation (SWCO). SCWO combines high temperature and pressure to convert an aqueous sample matrix into supercritical water, a phase in which the water is neither liquid nor gas, and where Supercritical Water Oxidation can occur. This results in more efficient oxidation, better TOC measurement accuracy and precision, and the elimination of problematic sample contamination 0after analysis.
The Sievers InnovOx measures from 0.5 to 50,000 parts per million (ppm) TOC. It features extended calibration stability, user-configurable alarms and outputs, an Ethernet Web browser interface for remote monitoring, and an intuitive color touch-screen display. The InnovOx is extremely easy to set up, operate, and maintain, and offers a low cost of ownership.
The organisers of WWEM 2012 (UK), the Water Wastewater & Environmental Monitoring event, have published the titles for many of the Workshops that will take place in Telford on the 7th and 8th of November.
In total, almost 80 workshops will be available during the event and whilst visitors will not have to reserve places; they will have to plan their visit carefully in order to ensure that they attend the most relevant workshops and conference presentations, whilst also allocating time to visit the 120+ exhibition stands.
Over 40 workshop titles have already been published covering a broad spectrum of environmental monitoring topics. For example, there will be presentations on the monitoring of groundwater and on high resolution multi-site monitoring of surface water to inform the development of legislation. Several workshops will examine wastewater sampling and monitoring, and others will look at ways to improve energy efficiency in wastewater treatment. Almost all of the most common water quality parameters will be discussed with specific presentations on TOC, DO, ammonia and metals.
The gas detection zone will also run a programme of workshops covering the latest technologies, sampling, calibration, and the benefits to be gained from monitoring toxic, combustible or explosive gases.
As new Workshops are finalised they will be added to list available from the Workshop tab at

Online-TOC Analysis with New Communication Modes Expands the Scope of Applications and reduces Operating Costs
Shimadzu (Germany) has introduced its new TOC-4200 online analyser. This analyser represents a new generation of instruments applying new modes of communication such as web-based monitoring or the Modbus protocol for digital two-way communication. The system supports virtually all TOC analytical applications such as the monitoring of surface waters, pure water or purified water, as well as monitoring the contaminant levels and pollutant loads in various waters. The TOC-4200 can be applied in wastewater treatment plants (influent and effluent) or in power plants (cooling water circuits, washing water, recovered water, condensates). In addition, the analyser offers new functionalities enabling extended application possibilities.
The digital Modbus function allows two-way communication with multiple instruments via a single integrated signal line, thereby reducing electrical wiring complexity. Modbus enables integration into bidirectional communication networks. The optional web-based monitoring function allows access to measurement data or instrument functions from any network-connected computer worldwide.
The TOC-4200 operates using the well-known catalytic combustion method with NDIR-detection. The relatively low combustion temperature, platinum catalyst, small injection volume and integrated sample pretreatment system allow a reliable TOC determination with low maintenance requirement.
The new design includes spatial separation of electronic components, measuring system and fluids.
The instrument is operated via a color touch-screen. The clear menu navigation simplifies the creation of calibration curves and measurement methods. A calendar function helps in planning automated determination of control samples or calibration curves.
In order to guarantee a smooth measuring process, the TOC-4200 records the consumption of the reagents required. A warning is given as soon as reagents need to be refilled, thereby preventing unnecessary interruption of measurements.
The instrument allows straightforward TOC analysis of offline samples without the need to interrupt online operation. After determination of the TOC value has been completed, the program returns automatically to the online mode.
The kit for high-salt samples increases maintenance intervals by a factor of up to 10 for the measurement of seawater, wastewaters or other samples containing high salt loads. The TN measuring module enables the determination of the total nitrogen content (TN) via catalytic combustion and chemiluminescence detection.
An optionally available, high-sensitivity kit enables measurement of samples with TOC concentrations below 1 mg C/L, e.g. groundwater, drinking water or recovered deionised water from semiconductor production.

New Humitest for Measuring Sewage Sludge Water Content
At the end of wastewater treatment, sewage sludge water content is about 99% of the raw matter. Reducing the mass to handle avoiding dust and improving quality are the primary issues of the valorisation and the recycling of sewage sludge. Treatment can occur by reducing its water content, notably through drying.
An on site moisture meter to improve working conditions and productivity. To be able to measure moisture content of sewage sludge (municipal sludge or industrial sludge) precisely, three parameters are significant: the representativeness of the sample, the reliability of the instrument used for measuring, the compliance of the operational mode by the person who measures.
The oven dry method is the reference test to measure sludge water content, but it is costly and time consuming.
Designed for instant and reliable measurements on site, the moisture meter for sewage sludge marketed by Domosystem (France) is calibrated according to the oven dry method.
Fitted with a measuring chamber, the new moisture meter allows to measure water content and temperature of sewage sludge granules/pellets. The user can also create his own calibrations.
