Health & Safety 49 New Sound Level Meters Introduced
3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Division expands its Detection Portfolio with the introduction of three new products – the 3M™ Sound Examiner SE-400 series of advanced integrating sound level meters, as well as 3M™ Detection Management Software DMS and the 3M™ AcoustiCal Calibrator AC-300. New 3M™ Sound Examiner SE-400 Series of Sound Level Meters
The new Sound Examiner SE-400 sound level meter computes the average sound pressure level (LEQ/LAVG) over the run time, helping occupational health and environmental safety professionals to more accurately assess noise levels. Parameters include: SPL, LMax, LMin, LPk (peak), Leq/Lavg and elapsed time. Sound Examiner SE-400 series features:
Variable, user-selectable data logging intervals, Large backlit LCD display, Rechargeable lithium battery, Numerous noise surveys stored in memory for download, Optional removable Type/ Class 1 microphone, Multilingual user interface, All models ship ready-to-use; no setup necessary . The SE-400 Series is available with kits in Type/Class 1 and 2 microphones, and with and without calibrators. The portable SoundPatrol serial printing feature is also
available.www.3m.eu/Detection 3M™ AcoustiCal AC-300 Replaces QC-20 Calibrator in Class 1 Instrumentation Kits
The AcoustiCal AC-300 is a precision sound level calibrator that replaces the 3M™ QC-20 calibrator for calibration of Class/Type 1 microphones. It generates two settings with either 250 Hz or 1000 Hz at a sound pressure level of 114dB. The sound pressure level and combinations of frequency outputs conform to the requirements of the IEC standard 60942: 2003-1 for sound calibrators. The AC- 300 will be included in 3M Quest instrumentation kits featuring Class/Type 1 microphones. Purchase of the SE-401-AC3 Sound Examiner Kit will include the AC-300.

The Sound Examiner uses the NEW Detection Management Software DMS. DMS is the next generation of 3M Quest instrumentation software, and is intended to replace QuestSuite™ Professional II (QSPII) for use in reporting, managing and analyzing exposures to a variety of occupational and environmental hazards.
DMS is similar in functionality to QSP-II; new features include:
A simplistic start screen with icons to navigate to existing data and/or instrument configuration and downloads, A unique look at the data parameters, including The Data Finder page, where data is sorted into sessions and studies, Easy sizing and arranging of data for viewing, A “Quick Report” function for fast report generation, Logged Data charts that help provide recalculation of noise and sound data for multiple time selections, Comprehensive reporting and printing provided including saving reports in Acrobat® PDF format, Easy data export to a Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheet, Red and green hearing protection ear muff icons help indicate when threshold limits may be exceeded.
A DMS software CD will be shipped free of charge with all new 3M Quest data logging instruments through June 30, 2012. This offer represents a savings of $495 – the list price of Detection Management Software DMS if purchased separately.
Reader Reply Card No. Occupational Safety and Health Exhibition
Six months ahead of OS+H Asia, organised by Messe Düsseldorf Asia (Singapore), the region’s leading occupational safety and health exhibition expects a strong attendance from more than 5,000 international trade visitors and an impressive line-up of about 150 international exhibitors with an estimated 40% based in Singaporean. The 8th Occupational Safety + Health Exhibition for Asia comes on the back of the recent launch of the workplace safety and health act in September last year. This initiative is an essential part of the new framework to cultivate good safety habits and inculcate a strong safety culture in the workplace.
OS+H Asia 2012 will once again collaborate with two major events for workplace safety and health (WSH).
The second Singapore WSH Conference 2012, organised by the WSH Council, Ministry of Manpower and WSH Institute, will be held on 12 and 13 September. The Conference, with the theme “Changing Landscapes, Shaping a Progressive WSH Culture”, will bring together CEOs, senior government officials and WSH professionals to discuss topics, such as:
WSH: Important for business sustainability? WSH Professionals: Operational or strategic? How to leverage on partnership for WSH? How to shape a progressive WSH culture? Enforcement vs. ownership: A balancing act? An ageing workforce: Challenging or opportunity?

New ICNIRP Standard Field Measuring Devices
Narda Safety Test Solutions (Germany) now offers low-frequency electromagnetic field measuring devices with evaluation conforming to ICNIRP 2010. PC software is available free of charge for the Electric and Magnetic Field Analyser EFA-300, which enables uploading of the new limit values to the instrument. A separate “ICNIRP 2010” version of the Exposure Level Tester ELT-400 is available. All previous and existing probes can also be used with the new instrument.
In 1998, the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) published its “Guidelines for Limiting Exposure to Time-Varying Electric, Magnetic and Electromagnetic Fields (up to 300 GHz)”. The limit values in these guidelines were mandatory for more than a decade. However, recent findings have necessitated a revision of the limit values in the low frequency range. These have been taken into account in the ICNIRP “Guidelines for Limiting Exposure to Time-Varying Electric and Magnetic Fields (1 Hz – 100 kHz)”, published in 2010. The new limit values applying to the workplace (occupational) as well as to the general public allow considerably higher magnetic field strengths in some low frequency ranges. In contrast, the limit values for electric field strength have been tightened up to some extent.
Although the new limit values are only slowly being incorporated into national regulations, measuring equipment from Narda now includes evaluation according to the new standard. Clients wishing to invest right now in test equipment can therefore be already prepared for exposure measurements complying with future standards.
