Environmental Analysis detected were found at least 5 times.

The research presented in this study emphasises the need for instrumentation that will detect and identify sources of long term environmental exposure to EDCs that can lead to ecological destruction and serious health effects. The application of GCxGC-TOFMS for this work presents an excellent instrumental tool for the detection of targeted and untargeted pollutants in impacted natural waterways. The data presented illustrates the advantages and benefits of GCxGC-TOFMS to provide a robust analysis as well as a data mining strategy using the “Reference” feature of ChromaTOF software to characterise a broad range of chemical contaminants in a Midwestern watershed.

Table 3: The results for thirteen 1 liter water samples prepared with solid phase extraction and analysed by GCxGC-TOFMS are shown below. A total of 102 chemical compounds were detected from six point sources in a Midwestern watershed. The compounds detected matched the reference standard with at least a 60% library match similarity. Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC’s) encompass a variety of chemical classes, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, polymer additives, coatings materials, personal consumer products, flame retardants, plasticisers, industrial by-products and miscellaneous pollutants. This data shows that out of 26 GCxGC-TOFMS analyses, 81% of the 102 chemicals detected were found at least 5 times.

New Next Generation Portable Gas Chromatography PID System

Defiant Technologies (USA) has developed a new MEMS based gas chromatography system dubbed the FROG-4000. In about 5 minutes, this new GC-PID micro-system will detect benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, TCE, PCE, and other VOCs in water and soil down to 1 ppb. FROG-4000 reports the chemical name and concentration on its display screen and stores every chromatogram on a micro-SD card for later use. This game-changing technology enables lab quality results at the field sampling site. FROG-4000 saves money and time; no more waiting for results from an offsite lab while expensive machinery and labor sit idle. All of this is made possible with cutting edge microfabricated technology that shrinks lab equipment down to battery operated components. FROG-4000 uses ambient air as its carrier gas and can operate 6 to 8 hours on its rechargeable battery. Defiant Technologies is delighted to bring the FROG-4000 to the market.

New Sample Analyser EST Analytical

(USA) introduces the Centurion RSK50 a new and novel instrument specifically for the complete automation of RSK 175 analysis as outlined by the USEPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory as well as the PA DEP. The system performs sample preparation of a full 40ml VOA vial, by removing an aliquot of sample and placing it in Helium filled empty 40ml vial. The vial can then be heated to reach equilibrium followed by loop or pressure balanced headspace injection directly to the GC. The process is completely automated, never exposes the sample to atmosphere, shows excellent precision and accuracy with carryover less than 0.08%.

The system may be used for a variety of headspace applications where user interactions with samples need to be eliminated. The automated processing of samples prior to headspace analysis reduces human error and improves overall reliability.

Powerful Cutting Mill for Tough Jobs

RETSCH (Germany) have extended their range of cutting mills by a new model which combines size reduction with very easy handling. The new cutting mill SM 300 can be perfectly adapted to many different size reduction tasks thanks to the variable speed from 700 to 3,000 rpm. The powerful 3 kW drive with RES technology and a high torque ensures excellent grinding results so that even difficult materials – such as wood, rubber or electronic scrap - aren't a problem. Another advantage of the SM 300 is the easy access to the grinding chamber for cleaning: the hopper is simply folded back and the push-fit rotor can be removed without tools.

The cutting mill SM 300 can be equipped with a wide range of accessories, among them a cyclone-suction-combination.

The RETSCH cutting mill family is completed by the versatile standard model SM 200 and the budget-priced basic model SM 100.
