32 Water/Wastewater Flexible Connection of pH Electrodes and ORP Probes
Any pH or ORP electrode can now be fitted to instruments from the company Ahlborn (Germany), using a cable with a programmable ALMEMO connector with a built in transducer. For example, all conventional electrodes with a plug head S7/SN6 can be connected. So as not to distort the measurement signal through the meter, an extremely high-impedance amplifier is integrated in to the cable plug. With this Impedance transformation multiple electrodes with different potentials can be measured through just 1 instrument. For probes with a SMEK type plug head a special cable is available with a transducer built in to the ALMEMO connector. Programming of this cable connector is designed for pH probes with an integrated NTC temperature sensor, with the linearisation stored in the plug. Due to the complete isolation of measuring inputs to the meter, it is possible to measure different samples with multiple probes. Via the programmable ALMEMO plug any sensor can be connected.

Heating Block with Active Cooling Function NANOCOLOR®
VARIO HC
Digesting water samples is an important routine step during sample preparation in water analysis. Continuing the analysis procedure after digestion can either take a long time as the cuvettes need to cool down, or may pose some dangers when handling still-hot cuvettes. To solve this dilemma, MACHEREY-NAGEL now offers the new NANOCOLOR® VARIO HC heating block with active cooling function. Like his brothers, the NANOCOLOR® VARIO 4 and NANOCOLOR® VARIO C2, the new block enables easy and safe digestion in water and wastewater analysis. The additional clue is the active cooling function, which decreases the cuvette temperature from 160° to 50°C in only 10 minutes while the tubes stay in the block. Thus, the block offers significant time saving, while providing maximum safety for our customers.
The heating block features state of the art design, USB interface for PC connection, lockable protective lids for maximum safety and a coloured touch screen with intuitive user guidance.
All standard programs for routine digestions such as COD, TOC, total-nitrogen, total-phosphorous, metals, AOX, organic acids or hydrocarbon are pre- programmed into the heating block, thus helping to avoid errors and increasing user friendliness.
The heating block includes 5 preprogrammed temperatures (70, 100, 120, 148, 160°C) as well as 4 preprogrammed digestion times (30 min, 60 min, 120 min, continuously). Together with the clear menu structure on the coloured touch screen, the new heating block is a high performance tool for daily water analysis digestions.
As the heating block features additional slots for freely programmable temperatures (40-160°C) and digestion times (0h:01min-9h:59 min), user specific digestion methods can be programmed very easily.
The NANOCOLOR® VARIO HC can digest 12 samples at once. The heating block allows the time-saving determination of high-speed COD, total-nitrogen, total-phosphorus and the total-content of various metals in only 30 minutes. In combination with extremely short warm-up times this leads to very efficient and economic sample preparations.
When designing the heating block, user safety was one of the top priorities. Therefore, the block includes rugged and integrated lockable protective lids and touch protection covers on the heating blocks’ surface for maximum protection. Obviously, the covers and lids can be exchanged easily in no time.
Extraordinary temperature stability and reliable protection against excess temperature guarantee the accuracy of the set temperature and avoid overheating of the heating block which in turn prevents overpressure in the test tubes. Optionally, the temperature profile can be displayed on the coloured touch screen.
As internal quality control, certification and documentation become ever more important, the NANOCOLOR® VARIO HC can be monitored for quality control purposes with the NANOCOLOR®T-Set. Together with the T-Set, the displayed heating block temperatures can be safely checked and compared to actual temperature in the block. The T-Set is a calibrated temperature detector with powerful electronics that also allows heating block calibration. The included software enables users to send test and calibration data to a computer, where the data can be analysed and documented. The software can even create readily printable quality control documents for easy filing and administration of quality control procedures.
The heating block NANOCOLOR® VARIO HC as well as the NANOCOLOR® T-Set are a strong combination for reliable sample digestions and accurate analytical quality control that meet the requirements of every lab today and in the future.

Turbicheck with Infra-Red Lightsource
Invensys Operations Management (USA) has released a two-wire loop-powered intelligent transmitter that, when used with appropriate electrochemical sensors, provides measurement, local display and transmission of contacting conductivity, resistivity or concentration.
For contacting conductivity or resistivity applications requiring a two-wire, loop-powered transmitter, the Invensys Foxboro brand Model 876CR with Foxboro sensors provides the most flexible solution for wide- ranging application conditions.
The Foxboro Model 876CR offers easy configurability, a rugged field-mounted enclosure for the most challenging industrial environments and agency certifications for hazardous electrical areas. Unlike other contacting conductivity and resistivity solutions, the Foxboro offering provides the widest choice of sensing and configuration selections, resulting in the best possible match for process applications. The result is long service life, quick and easy application set changes and savings in both material and labor costs. HART communications and a time-saving HART Device Type Manager integrates with the plant asset management strategies, and the transmitter outputs a HART digital signal and a 4 to 20 mA analog output.
Key capabilities include rapidly customised to specific application requirements, including conductivity, resistivity and concentration. One basic transmitter handles all applications, simplifying inventory; Up to two unique configuration profiles can be saved, facilitating a quick and easy change, reducing operator time and costs; Can be preconfigured for up to three different applications, each with its own display format, temperature compensation curve, chemical concentration curve (if applicable) and output configuration.
New Intelligent Transmitter Launched
The compact Lovibond infrared turbidity meter TurbiCheck is designed to allow fast, precise on-site testing. The unit measures the scattered light at an angle of 90°, as stipulated in EN ISO 7027. The wide measuring range from 0.01-1100 TE/F = NTU = FNU makes the instrument suitable for various applications, ranging from drinking water to waste water.
As infrared light is used for measurement purposes, the unit can be used to test both coloured and colourless liquids. The standards required for calibration of the unit are also supplied. A second adjustment mode allows alternative adjustment with user-defined turbidity standards.
Highlights include: Range 0.01 - 1100 NTU, Measurement with infrared light (at an angle of 90°), Measurement of coloured liquids, Easy handling and 600 tests without battery change.
