UK Focus - Water/Wastewater MCERTS for Water

MCERTS is the Environment Agency's (EA) Monitoring Certification Scheme. The scheme provides a framework within which environmental measurements can be made in accordance with the EA’s quality

requirements. The scheme is aimed at manufacturers, users and operators. The EA has appointed Sira as its chosen Certification Body to operate the MCERTS certification schemes.

MCERTS for water monitoring was a recent addition to the scheme, the first four product conformity certificates being issued in 2005. Since then nearly 40 certificates have been issued to manufacturers of water monitoring

equipment. The performance standards cover the following

• Continuous water monitoring equipment - Automatic Waste Water sampling equipment

- On-line analysers - Water flowmeters • Portable water monitoring equipment

Since the EA’s Operator Monitoring Assessment (OMA) scheme was extended to cover discharges to water in 2009, demand for certified products has grown significantly. Process Operators can achieve a higher OMA score by installing and using MCERTS certified equipment. Manufacturers are seeing the benefits too. More and more plant owners/operators are specifying MCERTS equipment in their procurement procedures, even in territories outside those regulated by the Environment Agency.

MCERTS for the self monitoring of effluent flow

The EA requires certain process operators to have their effluent flow-monitoring arrangements independently assessed and certified as conforming to their requirements by Sira (the MCERTS Certification Body).

EPR regulated sites with an effluent flow monitoring requirement in their permit may be required to comply with the MCERTS scheme in order to fulfil their environmental responsibilities. Compliance is achieved by satisfactory completion of a site inspection and a management system audit.

To date over 250 industrial sites and 3600 sewage works have been issued with a Site Inspection certificate

All MCERTS standards are freely downloadable from www.mcerts.net.

MCERTS on Transmitter, pH and Turbidity Sensors Imminent

Having achieved MCERTS certification on its range of portable and stationary samplers, Endress+Hauser (UK) has submitted its CM44* transmitter for approval, along with the Memosens pH and turbidity sensors.

As the transmitters within the stationary and portable samplers are based on the new Liquiline CM44* multichannel transmitter range, this formed the basis for the current MCERTS approval submissions. The transmitter can be utilised for many parameters, including pH, DO, Turbidity, Conductivity, Chlorine, Ammonium, Sludge Blanket Level, Nitrate and SAC. In the current MCERTS approval submission, Endress+Hauser selected the Memosens digital sensors for pH and Turbidity for certification along with the CM44*.

During development the sensors and transmitters underwent extensive laboratory and field tests. Much of the resultant information was utilised within the submission, subsequent discussions and the associated audit required under the MCERTS standard. A final technical review with the certification committee is now planned to conclude the approval process. Acceptance of the test data will result in an MCERTS certificate being awarded for the transmitter, pH and turbidity sensors.

Prestigious MCERTS Certification for Auto-Clean pH Monitor

Analytical Technology's (ATi) versatile Q45P Auto-Clean pH monitor was awarded an MCERTS product conformity certificate in November 2008. The certification of the Q45P helps provide customers with confidence in the system’s emission monitoring capabilities for the protection of the environment and human health.

The integrated Auto-Clean system extends sensor cleaning intervals on pH sensors that are mounted in applications containing high levels of solids contamination. Generating high pressure air blasts, the Auto-Clean system automatically removes contaminants from the face of the sensors. Each cleaning cycle lasts approximately two minutes, during which the monitor outputs are placed in a ‘hold’ condition to prevent false readings or alarms. The concentration of solids determines the cleaning frequency of the system, which can vary from as often as once every two hours to as little as once a day on an application basis.

Paul Wiggins of the Environment Agency adds: “The EA is pleased to see the addition of another instrumentation company to the MCERTS scheme. The certification of the ATi pH monitor offers end users a choice for their pH monitoring.”
