Show Preview - PEFTEC 2017 Diesel Fuels and Additives - Interference-free Determination

of Total Sulfur with the Patented MPO Technology The fast and trustable quantifi cation of sulfur contents is an integral part of the process and quality control in refi neries. The most reliable and fl exible method to do this is the thermal decomposition with a subsequent UV-fl uorescence detection of the formed SO2

present in the sample, the applied process parameters, and the used hardware, this can lead to more or less signifi cant interferences. The effect ranges between 0.6 – 2.0 ppm “false” too high TS reading per 100 ppm Nitrogen content.

This is a serious problem, considering the fact that many fuels classifi ed as sulfur-free already have an “actual” TS content close to the statutory limit value of 10 ppm. The sulfur content determined can exceed the specifi ed threshold easily, if nitrogen-containing cetane improvers are used. Thus the fuel does no longer comply with the requirements; a costly “after treatment” is needed. However, this unnecessary effort can be avoided by using matrix-independent techniques like the patented MPO – Micro Plasm Optimization, an enhancement of the classic UV-fl uorescence. In real-time interfering components are converted into harmless species, no additional auxiliary materials (e.g. catalysts), no extension of analysis time due to multiple injection, or matrix separation by trap-and-release approaches is required. Results are gained as fast as usual.

Throughput Demands While lab resources become more and more scarce the work load is increasing inversely. To manage these and being prepared for future challenges, modern laboratories require resource-saving analyzers that can be operated without specialist knowledge, deliver reliable results in the shortest possible time, and facilitate a maximum sample throughput.

The fast, reliable and effi cient determination of total sulfur is an important task in daily routine of refi neries and petrochemical industry. Even the smallest sulfur traces have signifi cant impact on the effi ciency of catalysts used and thus the quality of the fi nal products. The most reliable and sensitive method to do this is the high-temperature combustion followed by UV-fl uorescence detection of the formed SO2

, as described in relevant

regulations (e.g. ASTM D7183, D5453, ISO 20846 etc.). With conventional sulfur analyzers the achievement of results can require more or less time and effort, dependent on the sulfur content, matrix effects, and operator skills, especially when measuring ultra-traces and very high TS quantities. This affects effi ciency of the lab and thereby running costs, considerable. But there is a solution; HiPerSens®

detection combines unique sensitivity

and a wide linear measurement range. Error-prone dilution or the time- consuming trap-and-release is no longer necessary. Thanks to excellent combustion characteristics and detector stability, used sample quantities and number of replicate are reduced to a minimum. Widely varying concentrations are processed in the same sequence. Easy Protect creates the prerequisites for the safe unattended operation by automatically monitoring and optimising process parameters, malfunctions are prevented. The operator can perform other tasks during the analysis. Should “action” be required, the analyser sends a message, no matter where he or she is located at the time. The integrated web server and LAN capability allow control and data evaluation at anytime from anywhere – directly at the analyzer, via remote access from the control room, or when on the move with the smartphone. As simple as a smartphone app, the software guides users regardless of prior knowledge to their destination. The ASTM-compliant method library, legal limit values check, maintenance assistant and other feature do the rest to achieve the main goals of high- throughput labs – fast, reliable, profi table – from the very beginning.

Independent of the sulfur content, the majority of samples can be analyzed with excellent results in shortest time. However, for some samples quantitative-deviating measurement results can occur depending on their composition (e.g. cetane improver such as amyl nitrate, 2-ethylhexyl nitrate etc.).This behavior is originated by the positive cross-sensitivity of UV-fl uorescence detection to NO, which fl uoresces in the same wavelength range as SO2

, but with a signifi cantly lower intensity. Depending on the nitrogen content
