16 PEFTEC 2017 - Show Preview Colour Measurement for Petroleum Processing
An important procedure in petroleum processing is colour measurement. Colour is an indication of type and quality. Within this industry, the colour of petroleum is an important indication of the status of the refi ning process from its crude state to its deliverables. Pricing across the world is set, partly, against the colour of the product. In some applications, colour is also used as a means of recognition as is the case with aviation fuel and ships diesel fuel. Other petroleum products are required to be colourless such as food quality waxes. At PEFTEC, Stand No 126, the Lovibond®
team will be available to discuss and
demonstrate how colour should be measured according to industry standards and scales such as ASTM, AOCS and Gardner to mention just a few. During the seminar sessions, we shall also be talking about the importance of colour measurement and how to ensure accurate, repeatable readings.
A workshop on readings the importance of colour measurement for the Petroleum and Refi ning industry will be taking place on day 1 at 11 – 11.30am in Room 4. For More Info, email:

ISO17025 Verifi cation of Density Analysers
The VIDA, a fully automated instrument for the analysis of density in oil products, of PAC/ISL is a premium device in its category. Although a frequent performance validation is necessary in order to eliminate any kind of malfunction or incorrect test results. E.L.S. European Lab Services provides a trustworthy verifi cation according to ISO 17025 accreditation.
The challenge of performance verifi cation is to make sure every step of the ASTM, EN or other working standard method is checked thoroughly. It is not suffi cient to run a reference sample or do a calibration under ISO-conditions; the complete working method of the analyser must be verifi ed. This is the only way to make sure the device is testing according international standards. The ASTM D4052 is a specifi c standard method for density analysers. This method describes the verifi cation of the cell temperature in one point using a standard reference, programming and verifying the offsets, running a test using a reference product, etc.
After a correct verifi cation, the instrument is ready to use with a proper certifi cation. ELS is still the only company in the world providing the correct testing procedure for density testers and other petroleum analysers according using an ISO 17025 accreditation.

ASTM D7668 Method for CID510 to be Included in EN590 Diesel Specifi cations
The European Standard CSN EN590 specifi es requirements and test methods for marketed and delivered automotive diesel fuel. It is applicable to automotive diesel fuel for use in diesel engine vehicles designed to run on automotive diesel fuel containing up to 7% Fatty Acid Methyl Ester.
Accurate analysis of Derived Cetane Number (DCN) is an important tool for diesel and biodiesel fuel blenders and refi neries to maintain fuel consistency and quality. Existing technologies such as CFR Engine and other CVCC methods do not meet present market requirements with their high investment and operational cost. Herzog by PAC pioneered the Cetane ID 510 instrument: a unique technology that is proven to provide the best precision in the market for determining DCN of all types of Diesel Fuels, Biodiesel, FAME, HVO, BTL, and GTL. It is a compact, easy to use, and fully automated analyser, that offers excellent return on investment, and that is in compliance with today’s safety requirements. The CID 510 is in perfect correlation to ASTM D613, and approved as standard ASTM D7668.
The current versionof the EN590, dating from 2013, does not yet include the standard method for DCN / CID510, but ILS confi rmed the excellent precision of the PAC/Herzog CID510. In 2014 a new patented test method ASTM D7668 for CID 510 was published and is accepted in specs for diesel (ASTM D975), Biodiesel B100 (ASTM D6751) and Biodiesel B6 toB20 (ASTM D7467). In 2015 a new European test method EN 16715 for CID 510 was published and was accepted in the EN 590 diesel specs last year. Soon, the EN590 standard is to be included in the list of diesel specifi cations.
