Wind Turbines, Continuous ‘Blood Pressure’ Check or ‘Heart Attack’?

Wind turbines are an expensive asset that can require a lot of maintenance. Bearing or gear oil failure can lead to catastrophic failure and older technologies only detected damage after it occurred - the ‘heart attack’ analogy. Wouldn’t it be better to monitor your turbine’s ‘blood pressure’ continuously for signs of potential abrasive wear or damage problems?

The new WearSens from cmc Instruments GmbH (Germany) does just that. Gearbox damage is the end result of a series of events. The beginning is hairline crack formation

and this can be initiated by a number of different factors, too much load, turbine imbalance, transmitted vibration and simply the passage of roller bearings over time.

Once the hairline crack develops, oil then enters this crack, heat and vibration within the crack cause it to degrade into acids and hydrogen, inter alia. The hydrogen then causes embrittlement of the surface around the crack leading to shearing of particles, pitting of the roller bearing and subsequent damage. Corroded bearings, sheared particles and oil quality deterioration contribute to the damage.

WearSens will detect these changes long before the damage occurs. It is a unique condition monitor, online and continuous. WearSens can be used to optimise load versus damage, accurately show additive consumption and predict the need for timely preventative maintenance instead of rigid inspection intervals. Savings result from reduced downtime, accurate oil changes and reduction in abrasive wear.

WearSens is easy to install or retro-fit with a choice of inline or flow through measurement. The decentralised, web based monitoring system makes results available anywhere in the world.

Applications for the WearSens include wind turbines, high voltage transformers, large gearboxes and lubricant analysis in automotive and marine test benches.

The PIONA+ Analyser from Bruker (USA) is the gas chromatography solution for hydrocarbon and olefin analysis, easily performing a variety of industry standard (ASTM, UOP, EN, ISO, GPA) methods. Now a portfolio of technical application notes is available at their new, dedicated product website. They offer visitors direct access to a range of technical literature, including detailed methodologies and application notes on the analysis of hydrocarbon stream range from PNA (Paraffins, Naphthenes and Aromatics) to O-PIONA (oxygenates + n-paraffins, iso- paraffins, iso-olefins, n-olefins, cyclic olefins, naphthenes, aromatics).

Using a fully automated multi-dimensional gas chromatography approach to analyse individual hydrocarbons groups per carbon number, the PIONA+ Analyser ramps up productivity. The use of molecular sieve columns and carefully matched concurrent

temperature programming provides simultaneous separation of hydrocarbons. This reduces traditional analysis time by almost half and enhances the molecular carbon range analysed. Additionally, the stability, sample loading capacity, and lifetime of the traps in the PIONA+ Analyser have all been optimised, making it possible to analyse streams with high olefin content. A versatile instrument, the PIONA+ Analyser performs a single injection, total eluting analysis using universal flame ionisation detection (FID). The sample undergoes separation into its component groups (O-PIONA) according to carbon number, through the use of multiple columns and highly selective traps.

Spectronics Corporation (USA) has introduced the MDE- 2000 MarksmanII, an ultrasonic diagnostic tool that converts and amplifies inaudible ultrasonic sound into audible “natural” sound. This highly advanced tool allows the technician to “hear” even the smallest compressed air, natural gas, propane tank, vacuum, steam, and other pressurised leaks before they lead to major breakdowns.

The Marksman II uses a two-tiered approach to ensure accurate diagnosis. The receiver converts inaudible ultrasonic sound into audible sound using heterodyne circuitry. Then, its unique Sound Signature Technology finetunes the audible sound into the natural sound emitted by the leak itself. A 5- LED signal intensity indicator and audible alarm pinpoint the exact source of the problem. An Internal Noise Control (INC) feature safeguards against ambient noise.

The Marksman II comes complete with an ultrasonic receiver, full-sized headphones, a hollow air probe, a solid contact probe and an ultrasonic emitter that helps locate faulty seals, gaskets and weatherstripping in doors, windows, ductwork and other non-pressurised enclosures. All components are packed in a sturdy carrying case.

Also available is the MDE-2000NC Marksman II model, which is equipped with heavy duty, noise-canceling headphones for extremely noisy environments.
