22 Analytical Instrumentation Carbon/Sulphur Analysis by Combustion

Leco (USA) have introduced their CS844 explaining that it will redefine the way you determine carbon and sulphur in primary steels, ores, finished metals, and other inorganic materials. A high-efficiency combustion furnace offers the more efficient combustion of a wide variety of samples and keeps dust and splatter to a minimum. An improved IR cell design with thermostatic construction provides increased protection from ambient temperature fluctuations, and offers dual-range detection for both carbon and sulphur. Additional features such as a high-velocity HEPA vacuum system for dust removal and 10- and 60-position sample autoloaders make the CS844 Series a valuable resource for any industrial environment needing accurate analysis of carbon and/or sulphur.

The CS844 uses an on-board software platform known as Cornerstone, designed exclusively by LECO software engineers. Cornerstone is optimised for use with a touch-screen monitor mounted onto the front of the instrument by a fully-adjustable, six-axis boom. By having immediate control of all instrument functionality right at the instrument, the user benefits from increased usability, improved ergonomics, and a decrease in the cost-per-analysis.

Applied Rigaku Technologies (USA) announces the publication of a new Application Note for the analysis of sulphur (S) in oil per ASTM D4294. Application Note #1135 demonstrates the efficacy of the Rigaku NEX QC benchtop energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) analyser for this measurement.

Sulphur will always be an important element in crude and fuels oils, and plays a significant role in fuel quality as well as in the control of polluting emissions. Worldwide, regulations limit allowable sulphur content in diesel fuels, kerosene, heating oils, and similar fuels. Jet fuels also rely on the measurement of sulphur content to ensure optimum fuel properties and maintain emission standards. The monitoring sulphur content, from characterising, blending and refining crude oil, to the production of various fuel oils, therefore continues to be an essential analysis.

The method described in the application note complies with international standards for measuring sulphur in crude and petroleum oils and demonstrates the ability of the NEX QC, a simple and versatile benchtop EDXRF analyser, to yield exceptional results for the measurement of sulphur in diesel fuel in air, without the need for helium purge.

ASTM D7220-06 Broadens Measurement Range in Petroleum Based Analytical Products

Horiba Scientific (USA) was excited to learn of the recently published revision of ASTM D7220-06, the Standard Test Method for Sulphur in Automotive, Heating, and Jet Fuels by Monochromatic Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry by ASTM International. The expanded method allows the upper measurement range to 942 ppm, specifies a PLOQ of 3 ppm sulphur, and opens the scope of fuels beyond diesel and gasoline to include oxygen enriched gasoline, diesel/biodiesel blends, kerosene, jet fuel, jet fuel/biodiesel blends and home heating oils.

This news is significant because HORIBA’s MESA-6000 delivers the latest innovation in ultra low sulphur measurements in petroleum based products by allowing the user to simultaneously measure sulphur and chlorine. This means that anyone requiring the measurement of multiple elements can purchase a single analyser to achieve multiple results. The MESA-6000 utilises a combination of EDXRF technology combined with a mono-chromating optic to produce a polarised, monochromatic x-ray source. This approach, combined with the latest in SDD detector technology, enables an ultra low noise background for the best limits of detection for both S and Cl. This instrument also provides excellent performance at high concentrations for this wide range of sample types.

Master GC Turn-key Analysers for Total Petrochemical Solutions

The determination of volatile and semi-volatile components in petrochemicals is of utmost

importance to fulfil research, quality control, and process monitoring purposes. The flexibility and upgradeability featured by the Master GC from DANI Instruments (Italy) easily

supports an array of custom

configurations.

An extensive number of external devices are supported enabling the installation of different gas and liquid sampling products and switching valves, as well as auxiliary ovens and methanisers.

As requirements change, highly reliable instrumentation can not be enough to succeed in achieving trustworthy results: complete and guaranteed solutions, applications and services are essential to comply with the latest industry standards and specifications. In this respect, Dani (Italy) offers a full range of turn-key analysers to meet the most challenging analytical demands.

The Master NGA and Master RGA Analysers easily achieve the specifications given in the ASTM 1945, ISO 6974, ISO 6975, and UOP 539 methods for the determination of the commercial value of natural and refinery gas.

The Master LPG Analyser accurately determines the uniform quality of the hydrocarbon composition of liquefied petroleum gas complying with the ASTM D2163 method. Oxygenate compounds, commonly added to gasoline, are regulated by the ASTM D4815 and ASTM D5580 methods. The DANI Oxygenates Turn-key Analyser is the pre-configured and pre-tested system that allows you to meet these method requirements.

In addition, the continuous need of monitoring the quality level of biodiesel to best characterise a fuel sample according to the legal limits given in the DIN EN 1412 and the ASTM D6751 methods finds its ideal solution in the Master Biodiesel Analyser.
