Figure 3: ASTM D7213-05 (D2887 extended) resolution and skewness requirements are easily met using low bleed MXT®

-1HT SimDist columns.

Increase Lab Productivity with High Efficiency Columns

In addition to low bleed, column efficiency is also a critical factor in simulated distillation. Columns that are higher in efficiency produce sharper peaks and higher resolution values, which result in more samples analysed before the column fails the minimum resolution specification. The chromatograms in Figures 1-4 show typical separations for simulated distillation following ASTM methods; in all cases, the high efficiency of the MXT® resolution needed for highly reproducible results.

In addition to high efficiency, column inertness can affect resolution as active sites in a poorly deactivated column can result in significant tailing. MXT® deactivation process, Siltek®

allows more accurate low level sample analysis. Column: MXT® -1HT SimDist, 5 m, 0.53 mm ID, 0.10 µm (cat.# 70112); Sample: C5-C72 hydrocarbons (Separation

Systems SD-ss3e-03); Diluent: CS2; Conc.: 1%; Injection: 0.5 µL cold on-column; Temp. Program: 53°C to 380°C at 10°C/min. (hold 12 min.); Oven Temp: 50°C to 380°C at 10°C/min. (hold 12 min.); Carrier Gas: He, constant

Conclusion The MXT®

-1HT SimDist columns undergo a unique treatment, which bonds amorphous silica to the inner surface of the

column tubing. This process stabilises the dimethyl polysiloxane coating resulting in a highly inert, exceptionally low bleed column. Siltek®

deactivation reduces active sites, minimises tailing, and

-1HT Sim Dist column is a robust analytical column that performs well for ASTM high

temperature simulated distillation methods. The exceptionally low-bleed and high-efficiency characteristics of this column translate directly into assured method performance, reliable final boiling point determinations, and better control of refinery processes.

Automatic Pensky-Martens Flash Point Tester PMA 5 with Integrated Fire Extinguisher

Petrotest (Germany), a company of Anton Paar, now offers the PMA 5 Pensky-Martens (ASTM D93) flash point tester that performs flash point testing of petroleum products using Pensky- Martens closed-cup ASTM D93 A, B and C methods. PMA 5 can be used for both biodiesel and biodiesel blended fuels along with such distillate fuels as diesel, heating oil and kerosene and such potentially flammable liquids as lubricating oils, paints and varnishes.

With an integrated fire extinguisher as standard delivery item, PMA 5 highly improves user safety. Among the features of this highly versatile bench-top instrument are an over-temperature protection circuit, splash-proof membrane key panel, and a built-in sensor for automatic barometric pressure correction. The PMA 5 also offers both gas and electric ignition options standard. In addition, the instrument features a convenient to use multi-function head for easy one-hand simultaneous connection of all sensors and actuators.

Among the advantages of the PMA 5 is its ability to heat samples, while the instrument performs tests unattended. Heating keeps samples with a high-melting point liquid at temperatures above 150oC, allowing for the immediate start of the stirrer when flash point

testing begins. This saves time and makes cleaning easier.

PMA 5 comes completely ready for testing with automatic test routines, user definable programs as well as a rapid search program. The easy-to-operate analyser features the latest electronics, including a 5.7-inch color graphics display and Pmove® input of e.g. test parameters, sample name and program selection.

New Digital Economy Polarimeter

Krüss (Germany) have developed a high-speed measurement that reduces measuring time of samples to only 1 second irrespective of the angle of the sample. Compared to other polarimeters, much time is saved during the measuring process.

The P3000 is an economy version of the P8000 and operates just as fast as its big brother. An intuitive touch screen with basic functions has been implemented as well. Measuring results are shown either in optical rotation or in the international sugar scale. Data can be exported to a printer via an RS-232 interface.

For industries – i.e. sugar industry – which don’t need more than 2 digits after the decimal point and perform standardised measuring, the P3000 can be excellent value for money.
