18 Analytical Instrumentation Column Protection Extended to Widepore Columns

Phenomenex (USA), research and manufacturer of advanced technologies for the separation sciences, have introduced new SecurityGuard ULTRA offering to protect widepore (≥200 Å) UHPLC columns typically used in the analysis of biomolecules. The SecurityGuard ULTRA system dramatically extends the lifetime of columns packed with sub-2 micron fully porous or core-shell particles by protecting against the damaging effects of chemical contaminants and microparticulates introduced by the sample, mobile phase or system. These contaminants can also affect method sensitivity, quantitation and peak identification.

The new SecurityGuard ULTRA product is ideal for virtually any manufacturer’s UHPLC, sub-2 micron or core-shell widepore columns including the Phenomenex Aeris widepore XB-C18, XB-C8 and C4 products. By reducing the frequency of column replacements, as well as the need for troubleshooting and system down time, SecurityGuard ULTRA saves chromatographers time and money. Pressure-rated up to 20,000 psi (1,378 bar), these widepore guard cartridges have no significant impact on chromatography, backpressure or dead volume.

Reader Reply Card No 40 Utilise Hydrogen as a Carrier Gas for Your GC and Reduce Costs

In today’s labs, chromatographers are more likely to choose hydrogen as a carrier gas due to the recent increases in helium prices and its supply shortage issues. Helium prices are on average are 4 times higher than Hydrogen, and it is expected to increase 10-15% year over year. An average lab utilising 5 to 10 Gas Chromatography (GC) systems can save up to several thousands of dollars per year in operating costs just by changing the carrier gas to Hydrogen. The other major benefit of utilising hydrogen is that it can dramatically reduce the time required to run an analysis.

The “Using Hydrogen as a Carrier Gas: Fast Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis (DHA) analog to ASTM D6730” application note by PAC (USA) can be found on their website and compares the results between using hydrogen and helium as a carrier gas and the numerous benefits utilising hydrogen provides.

The system utilised for this application is the AC Analytical Controls Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis analyser from PAC. It offers a full range of detailed hydrocarbon analysers for flexible and reliable component identification. The unique DHA Combi system design accommodates the analysis of both light petroleum streams and the light end in crude oil.

Interfacial Tension Measurement at Oil Well Condition with High Pressure Unit

Interfacial tension between oil and surfactant solution and wetting of rocks and sand depend on pressure and temperature. KRÜSS (Germany) HP32XX high-pressure cells are used throughout the world to reproduce deposit conditions in the laboratory – with the standard configuration up to 690 bar (≈ 10,000 psi) and up to 200°C. For other conditions KRÜSS can provide customised solutions.

The pendant drop method is used to characterise oil/brine/surfactant-interfacial tension. Contact angle measurements of oil and surfactant solution on hard surfaces provide a definitive image of the wetting of the stone by the oil. A powerful camera and a high-quality lens ensure that both optical methods are carried out with utmost precision. The proven image analysis software also evaluates and manages the data.

Full Line of CRMs

Restek’s (USA) reference standard manufacturing and QA testing laboratories in Pennsylvania, USA, have added ISO Guide 34 and 17025 accreditations to their credentials. Issued by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA), these accreditations—as well as the company’s ISO 9001 registration, which has been maintained since 1994—serve as recognition that Restek and its labs meet the world-class quality standards established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Many laboratories are required to purchase certified reference materials (CRMs), which are only manufactured and QA tested at ISO-accredited labs like Restek’s. But, even those who do not operate under such restrictions will still benefit from the quality, reliability, and consistency of CRMs. Accredited labs must also have rigorous corrective action and customer satisfaction systems in place, so when you order reference standards from Restek, you can trust that you will receive quality and service.

In addition to a full line of options that are in stock and ready to ship, Restek’s custom reference standards are also covered by its ISO Guide 34 and 17025 accreditations. Whether you need something right out of the catalogue or a custom-formulated solution, Restek can satisfy all of your primary- and secondary-source certified reference material needs—along with GC and LC columns, sample prep supplies, and accessories. Additionally, you can access documentation for all Restek reference standards online for instant access any time.
