Measurement and Testing Rugged Sulfide-Resistant pH Sensors

Engineers and technicians looking for a flexible, cost-effective solution to monitoring sour water containing Hydrogen

Sulphide (H2S) compounds in oil/gas refineries will find the sulphide-resistant Models S10 and S17 Analytical pH Sensors from Electro-Chemical Devices (ECD) help them keep their processes and plants running efficiently.

Petroleum refiners must take care to monitor and treat

naturally occurring H2S that contaminates water in their operations to meet regulatory limits. Removing H2S from the water is done through air stripping that eliminates the sulphur

or oxidation reactions that convert the sulphides to sulphates. Once the water has been stripped of the sulphides it can be used in other refinery operations or be further treated as wastewater. Stripping is essential due to both the toxic environmental and corrosive effects on equipment of sulphides, which are also a common sensor poison.

ECD’s S10 and S17 pH Sensor product family monitor pH in water-based solutions. The S10 and S17’s Model 20005130 replaceable cartridge electrode features a pH range of 0 to 14 at temperatures from -5 to 130o 300 psi at 25o

C. It has been tested to sulphide ion concentrations of up to 25ppm.

The S10 and S17 product line consists of two unique sensor designs and replaceable electrode cartridges. The S10 Sensor is an immersion or an insertion style sensor, and the S17 is a valve retractable style sensor. They are fully rebuildable and feature a 316 stainless steel body that incorporates the sensing cartridge, a temperature module and a signal conditioner with cabling. These cartridges provide specific solutions for the measurement of pH, ORP, specific ion (pION), dissolved oxygen, conductivity and resistivity in a wide range of industrial process applications.

The pH and ORP cartridges are available with either Radel (PES) or PEEK construction configurations with full crown, double or single tine style pH bulb protection. The pION cartridges with solid state, glass or PVC sensing membranes are suitable for continuous online measurement. The DO electrode is a galvanic cell with a lead anode, silver cathode and Teflon membrane. The conductivity and resistivity electrodes are designed in both contacting and toroidal sensor configurations for application flexibility.

Reader Reply Card No 102 Subsea Load Development

Scan-Sense (Norway) has added a new product group of subsea load cells to its well-established range of load and strain measurement products. With 25 years of experience Scan-Sense deliver accurate and dependable measurement for submersed applications.

The trend within global Oil & Gas exploration tends towards deeper drilling and placing more operations subsea. To meet these challenging requirements, Scan-Sense has utilized designs incorporating high quality materials, double sealing, dual redundant electronics, proven coatings and designs for a long product lifetime.

Amongst the more challenging reference projects are, for example, subsea mooring sensors for the Hywind and Goliat projects. As Norway's largest Manufacturer of Load and strain measurement sensors, Scan-Sense enjoys a strong position in the Oil & Gas industry by expanding it's product range into meeting the challenging requirements of subsea applications, in ever greater depths and longer deployments.

Reader Reply Card No 103 New Advanced Field Calibrator and Communicator

Instrumentation and calibration technicians are required to carry more and more measurement equipment on the field, there is demand for increasingly accurate and stable measurements due to more accurate transmitter technology and there is an increased demand for measurement equipment that automates procedures and guides the user on the field. Furthermore, plants are looking to decrease measurement equipment lifecycle costs by replacing several individual measurement devices with multifunctional devices.

The new Beamex MC6 Advanced Field Calibrator and Communicator is a solution to the new process industry requirements. “We are extremely proud of the new MC6; it is the end-result of the largest product development project in Beamex’s (Finland) nearly forty-year history,” Ahola summarises the product development project. The MC6 is an advanced, high-accuracy field calibrator and communicator. It offers calibration capabilities for pressure, temperature and various electrical

signals. The MC6 also contains a full fieldbus communicator for HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus and Profibus PA instruments. The usability and ease-of-use are what really makes the MC6 unique. It has a large 5.7” color touch-screen with a multilingual user- interface. The robust IP65-rated dust- and water-proof casing, ergonomic design and light weight make it an ideal measurement device for field use in various industries, such as the pharmaceutical, energy, oil and gas, food and beverage, service as well as the petrochemical and chemical industries.

The MC6 is one device with five different operational modes, which means that it is fast and easy to use, and technicians can carry less equipment in the field. The operation modes include Meter, Calibrator, Documenting Calibrator, Data Logger and Fieldbus Communicator. In addition, the MC6 communicates with Beamex CMX Calibration Software, enabling fully automated and paperless calibration and documentation. The MC6 is more than a calibrator.
