Custody Transfer Accuracy for the Oil and Gas Industry
New Vortex Flow Meter
Invensys Operations Management (USA) has released its Foxboro I/A Series Model 84F (Style B) vortex flow meter. Part of a family of intelligent, high-performance vortex flow meters, the I/A Series Model 84F transmits a 4 to 20 mA or digital multidrop, as well as a pulse output signal, as applicable, using HART communication protocol for remote configuration, calibration and monitoring. The new vortex flow meter addresses growth initiatives within the upstream and downstream oil and gas industries, specifically on high-pressure pipeline applications for both gases (and vapours) and liquids.
Applications of the Model 84F include utility metering of fluids in the process industries; fuel, air, steam or gas metering for the measurement of energy in any high-use application; and stable and repeatable flow measurements for process control.
Siemens (USA) has a longstanding reputation for combining deep industry knowledge with innovative thinking with solutions capable of meeting the unique challenges faced by any industry.
For the oil & gas industry, one of these challenges is to be able to quantify the medium flowing through a pipeline at any given moment – and a company’s reputation and profit margin might both be at stake. Siemens can help. Their most recent development for the oil & gas industry, the SITRANS FUT1010 ultrasonic flowmeter for hydrocarbon applications, offers custody transfer accuracy and is virtually maintenance-free.
Just what distinguishes the SITRANS FUT1010 from the competition?
TransLoc sensor mounting system. With TransLoc, the sensors are permanently mounted on the outside of the meter, preventing contact with the medium and eliminating cavities that cause sensor fouling. In addition, an IP65 sensor enclosure rating and the use of dry couplant guarantee outstanding performance with minimal maintenance required.
WideBeam signal processing. Siemens’ WideBeam transit time technology enhances flow measurement precision by using the resonant frequency of the pipe wall to transmit the beam into the medium, with the wall acting as a waveguide. The outcome is a strong and coherent signal for high accuracy and rangeability.
The versatile SITRANS FUT1010 is available in two versions, one for liquid hydrocarbon measurement and another for gas measurement. Since the TransLoc mounting system allows for laboratory calibration, the performance of the liquid version complies with OIML R117 and API recommendations. With such output options as liquid density and API, the dual-purpose meter also serves as a perfect replacement for intrusive densitometers. It is ideal for flow measurement in custody transfer pipeline, terminal, refinery and transportation applications.
The gas version is compliant with AGA-9 and features an internal fixed AGA-8 table that allows the meter to report standard volume flow without a separate volume- compensating flow computer. Its non-intrusive configuration and ability to operate at high frequencies make it well-suited for applications with valve-generated acoustic noise. Application examples include production wells, underground storage, gas processing and power plants.
In addition, the SITRANS FUT1010 can be supplied with upstream and downstream pipe sections along with a flow conditioner to allow for the execution of laboratory calibrations on the entire meter run. This helps to ensure performance transfer between calibration and actual field conditions.
Another major benefit of the SITRANS FUT1010 for the oil & gas industry is that it meets stringent qualifications for usage in numerous countries throughout the world. A variety of approvals are available, including INMETRO, CSA, FM, ATEX and CRN.
Additional product highlights include; calibratable accuracy (<0.15% of flow for liquid, <0.2% of flow for gas), measurement of liquid viscosities up to 2800 cst and meter sizes ranging from 4-24 inches (DN100-DN600).
Corrections for zero drift without interrupting flow by dynamically compensating for variations in sensor temperature is offered, as is the option of 2, 3 or 4 sensor paths. The SITRANS FUT1010 is suitable for installation in Div 1/Zone 1 hazardous areas and offers user notification of pig passage.
The SITRANS FUT1010 ultrasonic flowmeter from Siemens: innovation, accuracy and versatility all in one.

Wafer-Cone Flow Meter For Fuel Gas Measurement On Compressor Skids
Control system design and process or plant engineers in search of a fuel gas measurement solution for natural gas compressor skids will find that the economical, low-maintenance Wafer-Cone Flow Meter from McCrometer (USA) delivers superior accuracy and reliability for small line sizes.
McCrometer’s advanced Wafer-Cone Flow Meter is ideal for gas or liquid service in line sizes from 1 to 6 inches, such as those required for natural gas compressors. Compressors are used to pressurise natural gas as it travels through pipelines in order to allow it to move as quickly as possible. The accurate metering of compressor fuel gas consumption is necessary for a variety of reasons, including emissions reporting, compressor efficiency, and individual well site gas allocation.
Space-saving and field-proven, the Wafer-Cone Flow Meter can be installed virtually anywhere in a piping system or be easily retrofit into an existing piping layout, resulting in significant installation flexibility and initial cost savings. It is also ideal for other applications including natural gas wellheads, burners or ovens, cooling systems, HVAC and more.
Wafer-Cone technology requires virtually no maintenance, offering cost-of-ownership advantages over traditional DP technologies such as the orifice plate. The beta edge of an orifice place wears down over time, which requires maintenance to maintain accuracy. For maintenance, orifice plate meters require either a bypass line around the meter or shutting down the gas compressor when pulling the orifice plate out of the line to perform maintenance.
The Wafer-Cone Flow Meter relies on unique differential pressure sensing technology that is designed with built-in flow conditioning. It achieves an accuracy of +1.0 percent, with a repeatability of +0.1 percent, and operates over a flow range of 10:1. The Wafer- Cone raises the bar for economy, ease of use and performance.

Yokogawa (Netherlands) has extended the communication capabilities of the ROTAMASS 3 Coriolis flowmeter series, by adding a Modbus interface. Modbus communications via an RS-485 connection will be available in both Modbus RTU and ASCII transmission modes.
The fast and simple Modbus communication, at up to 57 kbit/s, enables access to all relevant process measurements including - but not limited to - mass/flow, density and temperature. All measurement variables are included as readable address registers.
Compared to other field communication protocols like FOUNDATION Fieldbus or Profibus, the Modbus protocol involves no costly changes to the conventional 4-20 mA wiring, allowing a point-to-point or multi-drop network to be realised with minimal effort.
In addition to the Modbus communication, the standard I/O interfaces such as 4-20 mA, pulse/frequency and status in/out are still available for control and/or monitoring purposes.
For easy configuration of meter measurements and settings, a free ROTAMASS Modbus communication tool will be delivered with each ROTAMASS. This software tool is equipped with different functions, clearly shown in an explorer view. Despite Modbus communication, all settings can be done by means of the indicator. Even simultaneous HART communication via HHT or FDT is possible.
The ROTAMASS Coriolis flowmeter is respected in the market for its superior “box in box” design, which guarantees decoupling of the device from external vibrations and stresses. With its two U-shaped and thick wall tubes, this device achieves an optimum measurement accuracy of ±0.1% of reading for liquids and ±0.5% for gases, and has excellent zero-point stability, even under tough conditions in the field.
The mass-flow measurement range of the ROTAMASS spans from 45 kg/h to 600 t/h. A unique density accuracy of ±0.0005 g/cm3 (±0.5 g/l) results from the real density being calibrated using different liquids and temperatures. ROTAMASS can handle applications involving temperatures from -200°C up to +350°C.
Every ROTAMASS model is available with a variety of process connections offering pressure rates up to 285 bar. The result is a range of instruments to suit every customer in terms of pressure loss, measurement accuracy and price.
