Measurement and Testing On-Line Viscosity Measurement at Reference Temperature


Primarily suited for refining and petroleum-related industries, Sofraser’s (France) Thermoset MIVI also suits the chemical and polymerisation sectors for lubricant producers and resin manufacturers, respectively.


Sofraser’s Thermoset MIVI brings the most efficient technology to viscosity measurement at reference temperature by drawing fluid from the process, taking it to the required temperature, measuring the viscosity, and re-injecting the fluid into the main line.


Integrating an on-line automatic analyser that measures at reference temperature means that; the measurement is made at the actual reference temperature, regardless of the product’s behavior, correlation to ASTM standard can be done directly and accuracy is induced by the measuring principle, not by a calculation approximation.


The Thermoset MIVI requires minimal maintenance that is simple to accomplish. With its robust system it makes reliable measurements, there is no drift in time, and there is zero clogging. Moreover, installation is fast and easy; overall costs are significantly decreased. Due to reliable and repeatable measures obtained in continuous by-pass operation from the main line, the Thermoset MIVI maintains strict manufacturing specifications; it guarantees superior product quality.


The Thermoset MIVI delivers optimal production efficiency with one simple installation in a permanent process operation. It has a small footprint, no annex installation, and outside installation is possible.It offers increased profitability due to the integrated measuring chamber that does not have a bath or oven, translating into lowered maintenance down-time. The Thermoset MIVI has technological versatility with many process parameters. It is highly tolerant to input sample temperature and to varying particle sizes. For extreme input temperatures, a conditioning module can heat or cool fluids before reaching reference temperature. The Thermoset MIVI is ATEX built and can be configured to calculate the viscosity index according to ASTM 2270-04. In addition, it can provide kinematic viscosity with density measurement

New Rugged Viscometer Withstands Harsh EOR Conditions


Cambridge Viscosity (USA) has developed a new rugged, RTJ-flanged in-line process viscometer for a leading global oil company’s Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) application in the North Sea. Cambridge designed the SPL-393 viscometer for use offshore, where safety and reliability are not just a priority but also a necessity. The new viscometer meets all electrical, plumbing material, pressure and temperature requirements for use on a platform where environmental conditions can reach extremes.


The sensor connects into a pipeline using a standard ANSI class 900/1500 2" RTJ round flange. The rugged 316SS construction can withstand up to 2200 PSI and 190 degrees C, and has long penetration for large diameter pipes. The SPL 393 satisfies ASME PTC 19.3 Thermowells requirements. The new sensor is designed for highly accurate, repeatable viscosity readings and clean-in-place simplicity. Coupled with Cambridge's standard VISCOPro 2000 or Digital Viscometer: VISCOPro 1600 electronics, the sensor has sophisticated multi-shear compatibilities.
