Measurement and Testing
Super-Fine Sheathed Termocouple
Okazaki
Manufacturing Company (OMC) has developed the world’s
smallest sheathed thermocouple with an outside diameter
equivalent to that of a human hair.
The super-fine thermocouple has an outside
diameter of just 0.08mm, which
means it is ideal for use in applications where space is restricted. The thermocouple can also be bent on installation without causing damage or loss of performance.
Sheathed thermocouples are used in a wide range of temperature sensing applications, including process manufacturing, oil and gas, and petrochemicals.
With a response time of less than 1ms, the thermocouple is suitable for measuring the temperature of any small object or material. An outside diameter of 0.08mm means that the thermocouple element wires need to be extremely fine. In order to form the hot junctions, OMC developed highly advanced manufacturing technology.

Termowells for use in Fluid Catalytic Cracking Units Applications
New Robust Termocouples Offer Longer Life in Harsh Environments
A thermocouple is now available that offers high performance and longer life in harsh process environments, providing superior resistance to temperature, vibration, impact, corrosion and abrasion.
AEROPAK GREAT from Okazaki Manufacturing Company (Japan) is a thick wall mineral insulated thermocouple cable ideally suited to harsh, high temperature process environments such as incinerators and industrial ovens. The cable can be supplied with a hard coating such as cement or Stellite, which offer superior resistance in other harsh high temperature applications, including heavy oil and dispersion kneaders used in the mixing of plastics or rubber.
The gap between the element and the thick wall sheath is densely filled with high purity magnesium oxide, which prevents any residual air from penetrating the sheath, enabling faster response times compared to conventional thermocouples.

A spray coating for thermowell temperature assemblies has been developed that increases the life of thermowells in critical Fluid Catalytic Cracking Units (FCCU) in oil refineries, whilst also reducing maintenance and repair costs.
The SDC-4 plasma flame sprayed coating from Okazaki Manufacturing Company (Japan) is applied to the tip of its thermowells for use in FCCU applications, providing excellent corrosion resistance in harsh operating temperatures and pressures. At Fuji Oil Company in Japan, the SDC-4 plasma coating thickness on an FCCU thermowell tip had eroded by just 0.1mm during 51 months of operation. Mounted in the FCCU reactor stripper riser extension, with operating temperatures of 510 deg C and operating pressures of 0.27Mpa, the thermowell was manufactured from Inconel600, with a 16mm OD and an SDC-4 coating thickness of 2mm.
