New Flow Modulator for Routine GC×GC Analyses Announced

SepSolve Analytical Ltd has announced the launch of a flow modulator, INSIGHT™, for routine comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC).

The new modulator will substantially broaden the uptake and appeal of GC×GC, thanks to simplified technology, which offers high performance while avoiding use of liquid nitrogen. This approach means a greatly reduced cost of ownership for laboratories wishing to utilise the power of GC×GC; cost has previously been considered a major barrier for the technique to all but the largest laboratories.

INSIGHT uses precise control of gas flows to simply fill and flush a sample loop to fractionate the first-column effluent and deliver it to the second column. The pared-down design fits easily inside standard GC ovens, and uses reverse fill/flush dynamics to provide improved peak shape and increased peak capacity for GC×GC compared to first-generation flow modulators.

Bob Green, Sales & Business Development Manager at SepSolve, said: “Because of their precise flow control, flow modulators inherently provide better method repeatability rather than cryogenic systems, which can be inconvenient, bulky and expensive to operate. This makes them ideal for high-throughput laboratories running routine GC×GC analyses and comparisons across large sample batches.

“With the launch of INSIGHT, analysts have at their disposal a highly efficient, robust, and cost-effective tool that opens the door to routine GC×GC analyses of complex mixtures, in a way that simply has not been possible up to now.”

INSIGHT provides separation of volatiles from C1 to C40 and above without using liquid nitrogen, and eliminates modulation breakthrough for improved characterisation of both high-loading and trace components. It is also highly versatile, and is compatible with heart-cutting, splitting for parallel detection, and back-flushing.

SepSolve’s applications laboratory has shown the effectiveness of INSIGHT for a range of challenging applications, including aroma-profiling of whisky, high-throughput screening of contaminated soils, and identification of fragrance allergens.

Green added: “Our customers have been really enthusiastic about the capabilities of INSIGHT, and we expect it to be highly popular amongst the fragrance and petrochemical industries in particular, which rely upon GC×GC to separate and identify often very similar compounds in highly complex mixtures.”

INSIGHT is available as a stand-alone addition to existing GC setups, or as part of a tailored application-specific package, direct from SepSolve’s UK headquarters.

High Purity Nitrogen Generator with Innovative Installation

The HP N2 EVO generator is available in different models with a broad range of flows: 500, 750, 1300, 4000 Nml/min. Purity achieved depends on the model: from 98% up to 99.999%. A second or third unit can be stacked on top of the initial one to increase the nitrogen generation flow up to 12 Nl/min.

The innovative design allows a high degree of versatility reached by the different ways to position the device: on top of the compressor (LNIS scroll model), bench top or wall mount. This flexibility allows to save bench surface dedicated to analytical devices. No tools or supports are required and the positioning can be changed at any time.

The generator status is indicated by a large LED strip, showing either normal operation mode, warm up or alarm status.

The high nitrogen purity is reached by a high performance Carbon Molecular Sieve with an automatic routine for the scrubber regeneration. The efficiency of the scrubber allows to filter below 10 ppm of oxygen traces. An optional catalyser removes background hydrocarbons or CO traces to less than 0.1 ppm.

Engineers have adopted lean design rules to develop this generator; this means fewer internal parts with less risk of troubles and a higher reliability.
