Kwan Goo Edmond (Ed) Cho, an industry veteran with a broad depth of experience in life sciences and pharmaceuticals, has been selected as the President of Harlan Korea.
As president of Harlan Korea, Cho will have full profi t and loss responsibility and overall accountability for all aspects of the Harlan Contract Research Services (CRS) business stream serving the Korean chemical, agrochemical and pharmaceutical markets.
“Dr Cho was selected to provide leadership to our Korean organisation in an increasingly competitive and complex commercial, regulatory and technical environment because he has a proven ability to work across departments,” said Eric Hess, Harlan CRS Vice President of Commercial Operations. “We are confi dent Dr Cho can plan and execute strategies to provide top-quality service to the Korean markets.”
Prior to joining Harlan CRS, Cho was director of market access
and business development for Zuellig Pharma Korea, an $8 billion subsidiary of the Zuellig Group, providing contract services and clinical reach to multinational companies in more than 15 countries. He also held sales, marketing and management positions of increasing responsibility during 14 years with LG Life Sciences, Ltd, and served in the Special Forces of the Korean Army.
Cho earned a bachelor’s degree as well as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Seoul National University.

Mutual Agreement Between Shanghai Advanced Research Institute and Micromeritics Instrument Corporation to Create Advanced Materials Characterisation Laboratory

The President of Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr Songlin Feng and the Vice President of Micromeritics Instrument Corporation (MIC), Mr Thomas Cook, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the creation of a materials characterisation demonstration and service laboratory. SARI is currently expanding their campus to promote advanced science and research. Micromeritics is proud to support the expansion with this agreement. The building that will house this 2000 square foot state-of-the-art laboratory is located on the SARI campus. Construction of the new laboratory will begin in the near future. The signing ceremony was held at the SARI campus, Pudong New District, Shanghai, China, and attended by Dr Yuhan Sun, Vice President, Dr Tiejun Zhao, and other staff members and students of SARI, and Dr Renliang Xu, China Business Manager and other MIC staff members.

Applikon Biotechnology Opens New Production Facility in Guangzhou, China
On Wednesday 19th March the new Applikon Biotechnology production facility in Guangzhou, China, was offi cially opened. The opening ceremony was combined with a scientifi c seminar ‘Innovations in bioreactor technology’. This new facility is located in ‘science city’ a newly developed high tech science park in Guangzhou. The grand opening was attended by both international and national
customers, business relations, international and
national offi cials, scientifi c relations and a large team from Applikon Biotechnology in the Netherlands.
The new production facility has been operational for several months and the festivities on 19th March were to celebrate this achievement and to offi cially mark this further step in the development and growth of the company. Arthur Oudshoorn, Managing Director of Applikon Biotechnology, and his dedicated team are proud and
happy with these large new premises, which consists of offi ces, a warehouse, production facilities, QA/QC testing section and a technical support department.
In the new facility, Applikon Biotechnology will be able to provide a complete range of bioreactor systems ranging from micro litre research volumes up to production systems for pharmaceutical and biotechnological applications in the Chinese market.
Being closer to the customers in China will decrease response time and improve the local technical support for users of advanced bioreactor systems.
The opening ceremony took place on 19th March 2014.

Novasep Expands and Opens Subsidiary in India
Novasep, a leading supplier of manufacturing solutions to the life sciences industry, today announces it is expanding its presence in India with the opening of Novasep Process Engineering Services PCT Ltd, a part of its Industrial Business Unit. The new offi ce will enable Novasep to serve more closely industries in India producing functional and commodity food and feed ingredients, milk derivatives and bio-based chemicals.
Michel Cotillon, formerly R&D head of the industrial biotech business and then its area sales manager for France and Benelux, has been promoted to head the subsidiary as General Manager.
Novasep’s Indian subsidiary will provide expert local support to sugar mill operators in India to integrate Novasep’s optimised processes. These processes enhance the quality of fi ne liquors, increase sugar production yields or competitively produce liquid sugar with ApplexionTM ion exchange, a technology pioneered by Novasep and today largely used in the food industry.
For the Indian dairy industry, Novasep will provide local expertise
in developing cost-effective processes that
guarantee the performance of: whey demineralisation using electro-dialysis reaching D50-70 whey grade or combined with Applexion ion exchange to reach D90 whey grade; lactose purifi cation with Applexion ion exchange and nano- fi ltration; production of crystalline lactose using Applexion SSMB chromatography.
Novasep will continue to sell biopharma chromatography equipment and associated processes in India.
Novasep India will continue to collaborate with the Nilsan Nishotech Systems Pvt Ltd team, which has represented Novasep in India for more than 20 years. Nilsan Nishotech will remain the exclusive agent for Novasep for industrial biotech and biopharma purifi cation processes and systems in India.
