25 Novel NGS Target Enrichment Solution for Methylation Assessment Introduced
Roche have announced the launch of the SeqCap Epi Target Enrichment System for DNA methylation assessment at single-base resolution. This system includes both a fixed content epigenome-wide design and a full range of custom target offerings. This product line was designed to provide epigenetic researchers with next-generation tools to study DNA methylation with advantages in breadth, depth and throughput over other technologies currently available in the market.
DNA methylation has been shown to play an important role in a host of biological processes, including gene expression, dosage compensation, genome stability and more. Its involvement in cancer and many other diseases has been increasingly studied, in recent years. Current research tools either provide limited efficiency or introduce experimental biases for genome-wide or targeted applications. Based on the proprietary probe design and manufacturing technologies from NimbleGen, the SeqCap Epi System, which was developed through collaborations with a number of key opinion leaders in epigenetic research, is designed to dramatically increase efficiency and accuracy for broad discovery applications as well as focused DNA methylation studies.
“We realised the strategy underlying the NimbleGen technology could help overcome a number of challenges in DNA methylation analysis,” said Dr John Greally, Director of Center for Epigenomics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, who has been a key collaborator of NimbleGen’s. “The SeqCap Epi custom designs have allowed us to focus our sequencing in a way that is tailored to the cell type we’re studying, using new information about regulatory landscapes from the ENCODE and Roadmap projects. This allows us to get the most out of our sequencing, getting us beyond the inflexible genomic survey approaches the field has used in recent years.”

First Catalogue of In Vitro Human Tissue Assays Launched
CryoFreeze® – Range of Tubes, Racks and Accessories for use in Cryogenic Preparation and Storage
SSI, an American manufacturer of consumable plastics for laboratory researchers for over 23 years, has launched a comprehensive family of cryogenic storage products designed to provide researchers with consumables needed in the cryopreservation of tissue and cells.
Biopta Ltd have announced a major development in discovery research with the launch of the first catalogue of assays based on human functional tissues. The catalogue serves to provide the scientific community with ready access to assays that improve the prediction of safety, absorption and efficacy of drug candidates in humans.
Ex vivo human tissue studies play a key part in drug development, providing pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies with a more predictive human model earlier in the development process. Many pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies have, up until now, depended solely on animal models; however, Biopta’s access to fresh functional human biomaterials means that early human tissue testing is increasingly becoming a routine part of preclinical drug discovery.
Biopta have announced that their research has generated a database of over 60 assays in a range of human fresh tissues. Biopta’s database is the first to build an in vitro library of human functional pharmacology using intact tissues. Biopta aims to fill the knowledge gap in preclinical testing by providing phenotypically-accurate assays that measure drug responses from healthy and diseased human tissue.
Dr David Bunton Biopta’s CEO said: “The literature on human preclinical pharmacology is unacceptably sparse and too many decisions on early-stage compounds are made without considering translation to human biology. By illustrating the wide range of tissues and functional endpoints that are possible in human functional tissues, we hope to raise awareness that drug discovery can be de-risked at an early stage.”
Dr Ruth McLaughlin, Business Development Manager at Biopta said: “Biopta’s catalogue aims to provide important human biology data during early stage drug discovery. This library also serves as a valuable searchable resource for experimenters seeking human translational research. We will be continuing to add tissue types, functional biomarkers of drug response and different mechanisms of drug action over the coming months.”

The CryoFreeze® family of cryogenic tubes, racks, and accessories was created to provide users with safe and handy solutions for the cryogenic transportation and storage of biological material.
The CF Tubes are comprised of FDA-approved, medical grade polypropylene tubes and HDPE caps. Additionally, the tubes comply with the In Vitro Devices Directive (IVD). Tubes are packaged in resealable stand-up pouches that minimise the use of benchtop space. Contrasting black 100µL graduations on the tubes are easy to view, and researchers have found the prominent writing area to be very useful.
SSI offers internally threaded caps that maximise tube storage within racks and boxes, and also externally threaded caps which are ideal for aseptic technique, as they reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Sizes of the CryoFreeze® tubes range from 1.0 mL up to 4.5mL. Tubes are offered with self-standing stargrip bases or a round bottom design.
To round out the CF cryogenic portfolio of products, SSI offers colored cap inserts, polycarbonate storage racks and a unique workstation.
The CryoFreeze
polycarbonate storage racks are offered in 5 colors, and produced in 25, 81 and 100-well confi gurations. The CryoFreeze GripRack™ is a ruggedly designed 40-well workstation. It features rubber no-slip grips on the base to hold securely
on the benchtop. Ribs inside the wells of the rack enable tubes with stargrip bases to be easily opened or closed with one hand. An easy to read alphanumeric index on the rack makes for rapid sample identifi cation.
Since 1990 SSI has been developing and producing innovations for life science at their California home offi ce. They operate under an ISO9001 certifi ed Quality Assurance process and deploy state of the art fully automated manufacturing. SSI consumable products are sold through laboratory supply distributors worldwide.
