6 Throughput Optimisation in Chromatography
Chronos version 2.0 from Axel Semrau GmbH & Co is the ideal master software for the efficient automation of complex sample preparation procedures using CTC PAL samplers.
Chronos optimises complex autosampler process sequences and reduces waiting times for all system components, GC(MS) or LC(MS) systems and autosamplers. This is enabled by the intelligent algorithm used by Chronos to organise parallel execution of several samples without any loss of precision or reproducibility. This replaces the usual serial processing of samples and represents an innovation, which increases significantly the efficiency of the laboratories.
Chronos enables very flexible and simple creation of the sample list. Through integration of Xcalibur and ChemStation Chronos links the sample list for the autosampler control with the data system list, so that the user only has to manage one sample list. This simplifies handling, saves time and avoids errors.
A graphic representation of the sample processing is created at the touch of a button. Multi-stage sample preparation procedures can be parallelised automatically by means of an integrated algorithm. A graphic representation illustrates the process sequence. Predefined tasks allow quick and flexible creation of methods.
The new version Chronos 2.0 offers a range of new functions: support for liner exchanger functionality for ATAS Linex systems; valco valves can be programmed via serial interfaces; management of several sample lists; external programs for evaluation can be called from the methods; reading in weight results from Mettler Toledo balances; support for SPME fibre exchangers; support for ITEX functions; and import of csv files from LIM systems.
Chronos is supplied as standard with ready-made modules for the usual analysis procedures; this includes headspace, liquid injection, SPME and other standardised methods. If required, the user can generate modules in Chronos adapted to their own needs. Xcalibur from Thermo Scientific and ChemStation from Agilent are integrated.

With the SPECTRO MIDEX, SPECTRO XEPOS and
SPECTRO xSORT XRF instruments, SPECTRO offers high performance solutions for the analytical requirements of RoHS, WEEE and
ElektroG:
– Rapid limiting value control of cadmium, mercury, lead, chromium, bromine and other elements from Na to U
– Direct analysis of e.g., components and assemblies, insulation and housing materials
– Point analyses, line scans and mappings (SPECTRO MIDEX) as well as automated measurement of entire samples
New Automation Possibilities in Ion Chromatography
Pressure to increase output while reducing costs requires laboratory automation wherever possible. Metrohm’s new 815 Robotic Soliprep meets such demands as it allows to completely automate preparation and analysis of liquid and solid samples in ion chromatography. The 815 Robotic Soliprep provides maximum flexibility as it can be customised on demand to meet individual customers’ specific requirements.

The 815 Robotic Soliprep is a state-of-the-art sample processor, which reliably transfers both liquid and solid samples to an ion chromatograph. A broad range of working steps such as pulverising, homogenising, extracting, filtering or diluting can be safely entrusted to the 815 Robotic Soliprep and included in the analysis method. Due to the incorporation of inline sample preparation into the analysis system, manual intervention is no longer required during the determination. The sample rack of the 815 Robotic Soliprep is equipped with various inserts, sample beakers, syringe filters and needles and can be customised on demand to meet individual customers’ specifications. Combined with Metrohm’s advanced ICs the 815 Robotic Soliprep opens up numerous new applications and application fields. Applications include, to mention just a few, the analysis of ingredients and contaminants in tablets, animal feed, sediments or food.

Featuring sealed split beam optics, all the 67s deliver more accurate measurements than single beam instruments, while being more affordable than double beam spectrophotometers. The sensitive yet durable touch screen and colour display, together with sealed touch-sensitive QWheel™ for fine cursor control, make for a highly flexible, easy-to-use interface.
Both the 6705 and 6715 cover the wavelength range from 190nm to 1100nm using a pulsed xenon light
source, with the 6715 providing an ultra narrow bandwidth of 1.5nm. Available modes include photometrics, spectrum scanning, multi-wavelength analysis, kinetics and quantitation, giving direct concentration results against single or multi-point calibrations. Extensive post-measurement tools enable results to be presented exactly to each user’s requirements.
Jenway have developed secure multi-user operation for the 67 series spectrophotometers to protect access to methods on instruments, which are shared among multiple users. For maximum security, PIN codes can be allocated to designated individuals, groups or departments, and each method can be tagged Public, Read Only or Personal. In addition to the internal memory, removable SD or SD/USB memory cards give the flexibility to clone multiple instruments with the same settings, for example in a busy teaching laboratory, or to save and transfer ‘your spectrophotometer’ to another instrument or a PC.
Compatibility with the TrayCell and micro-cuvettes enables the determination of nucleic acid and protein concentrations in very small sample volumes, down to 0.7µl. The range of compatible accessories for the 67 series includes automated eight and water heated six-position cell holders, a peltier- controlled cuvette holder, programmable sipper pump, peltier sipper module and various passive sample holders.
