29 Novel Laser Coding Technology for Pharmaceutical Glass Containers

A completely new innovative laser-coding system enables glass containers for parenteral use to be clearly coded at the glass syringe manufacturer and tracked from production to end customer. This innovation can help pharmaceutical companies to develop a reliable Track Trace system and further reduce the risk of mix-up of syringes and batches. At the same time, this laser-coding technology is an effective means to counter drug counterfeiters.

The benefit: patient safety for pharmaceutical and diagnostic products is guaranteed. The laser-coded containers meet the demands of clean room standards and no additional chemicals or materials are required for coding. Moreover, the laser-coding system can easily be integrated into existing filling systems, providing a stable, highly reproducible and safe process.

The laser-coding process was developed and tested under production conditions by a team of experts from the pharmaceutical industry, glass tubing production and pharmaceutical packaging supplier for software and vision inspection. Involved were the companies Roche Diagnostics GmbH, Schott forma vitrum AG, SCHOTT-Rohrglas GmbH, Seidenader Vision GmbH and Vesdo AG.

Various tests have proven that the laser coding causes no microcracks and has no effect on the mechanical stability of the glass. The process can safely code each container with an individual 2D data matrix code, making it 100% readable. To guarantee 100% readability of the code on the curved glass surface of the syringe, the team has developed dedicated algorithms and test methods.

The laser-coding concept also offers a documentation tool that can provide a trail for each container including information such as: place of production, fill date, expiration date or day of use. The 2D data matrix code, which is marked on to the container is barely visible to the human eye but allows for the indexing of a database record which contains data related to the individual item, such as drug specification, dosage, production line, batch. This record can have more data added during the lifecycle of the product.

Another New Mini Centrifuge

Alongside the personal SCF1 Spinner, Stuart announces the more powerful SCF2 Microcentrifuge. This compact, variable speed unit accommodates a fixed angle rotor holding 12 tubes with a maximum speed of 13,500rpm or a strip tube rotor.

Versatility and ease of use are key features of the SCF2 Microcentrifuge. The fixed angle rotor holds up to 12 x 1.5ml or 2.2ml microfuge tubes and, using the supplied adaptors, 0.5ml and 0.2ml tubes can also be centrifuged. The strip tube rotor holds four strips of 8 x 0.2ml tubes. No tools are required to install the rotors and spin speed is variable, up to 13,500rpm for the fixed angle rotor and 6,000rpm for the strip tube rotor.

Centrifugation speed can be displayed in rpm or rcf and the timer can be set for run times of between 1 and 30 minutes. A pulse button enables rapid spin-down, with acceleration to the preset rpm followed by immediate deceleration. Safety is ensured by a door lock, which prevents the SCF2 being opened while the rotor is in motion.

According to Chris O’Connor, Bibby Scientific CEO: “In addition to all the everyday lab tasks possible with the smaller, fixed-speed SCF1 Spinner, the SCF2 Microcentrifuge can be used for processes involving spin column kits for binding/washing, such as sample preparation, sample clean up and sample concentration. Other applications include pelleting of precipitates.”

The SCF2 Microcentrifuge incorporates BioCote® protection, which dramatically reduces surface contamination in the laboratory and the associated risk of infection. This unique antimicrobial additive is applied

during the manufacture of all Stuart benchtop laboratory equipment and remains effective for the lifetime of the product. BioCote is a silver-based finish, which protects by disrupting vital cellular processes within all common bacteria and fungi, including antibiotic-resistant pathogens such as MRSA.

Circle no. 395 ADVERTORIAL New Closed-loop Containment Isolator

The new closed-loop

containment isolator is the most recent HEPA filtered glove box offered by Plas-Labs. The 830- ABB/CLC contains two (2) 20.32 cm round HEPA filters, magnehelic gauges, blower, and pre-filters.

The glove box operates under a slight negative pressure. The optically clear glove box construction provides optimum light and visibility inside the glove box.

All glove boxes include bright white ambidextrous Hypalon gloves, electrical outlet strip, four (4) valves for purging, and an optically clear cylindrical transfer chamber. Clearly your best choice!
