Next Generation Data Analysis Software

ACD/Labs have announced the commercial availability of ACD/Spectrus DB. This powerful and unique database is at the core of the Spectrus integrated analytical and chemical knowledge management platform. Release of Spectrus DB represents a three-year effort resulting in the completion of the Spectrus platform which provides a variety of productivity-increasing enhancements, collaborative science, and the preservation of analytical intelligence. Plans for this new platform were unveiled at Pittcon 2011, shortly followed with the commercial release of ACD/Spectrus Processor, the all-in-one processing, structure characterisation, and reporting software designed to assist in the interpretation of analytical and chromatographic data. Pittcon 2012 marked the release announcement of ACD/Labs Spectrus Workbooks bringing higher productivity and efficiency to analytical laboratories, while adding complete, accessible, re-usable analytical characterisation to the modern informatics environment; and the capability to easily manage chemistry project data.

Next Generation Ion Chromatography Suppressor Introduced

Thermo Fisher Scientific introduced the Thermo Scientific™ Dionex™ ERS™ 500 Electrolytically Regenerated Suppressor which replaces the Thermo Scientific™ Dionex™ SRS™ 300 Self Regenerating Suppressor. The Dionex ERS 500 Suppressor minimises dispersion to deliver higher resolution separations, especially when coupled with Thermo Scientific™ Dionex™ 4µm based IC columns. The Dionex ERS 500 suppressor permits improved compatibility with a wider range of detection techniques including MS, ICP, ICP-MS due to its improved backpressure resilience. Additionally, the Dionex ERS 500 suppressor precludes the need for periodic chemical regeneration, allowing for greater ease of use and reproducibility.

Eluent suppression technology allows for a wide variety of inorganic and organic analyses for ion chromatography applications such as environmental, high purity water, semiconductor, high purity chemicals, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and process monitoring. Suppression greatly enhances signal-to-noise ratio by decreasing the background conductivity of the eluent and associated noise while simultaneously increasing analyte conductivity. The Dionex ERS 500 is an electrolytic suppressor with a new hardware design that allows the suppressor to be more pressure tolerant than previous generation suppressor devices. The suppressor flow pathway has been redesigned to optimise band dispersion and improve the flow and sealing properties.

The platform puts an end to the ‘one-and-done’ life cycle of analytical data to aid chemistry groups who are trying to maximise their return on investment for data generation. With the Spectrus platform, ACD/Labs builds upon its broadly accepted desktop applications and unique algorithms to unify chemical and analytical information into a homogeneous environment. Live data can be searched and re-analysed, and chemical intelligence re-applied. The result is a ‘one-to-many’ information-from-intelligence live cycle that brings unified laboratory intelligence to scientists all across the chemistry organisation. Spectrus DB can also be integrated with existing informatics systems to enhance their capabilities and achieve maximum return on investment.

The Spectrus DB can be easily configured to meet the needs of individual organisations and laboratories. Customisation can add automated processing and interpretation for higher productivity, while sample tracking and visualisation may be added to meet workflow requirements.

Bonded Phases for Polar and Non-polar Molecules

The Cogent TYPE-C™ silica bonded phases, manufactured by MicroSolv Technology Corporation and available through Hichrom Ltd, have a surface populated by silicon-hydride functional groups instead of silanols. Patented bonding technology is then used to produce the Cogent Bidentate C18, Bidentate C8, UDC-Cholesterol, Phenyl and Diamond Hydride (the ‘Metabolomics Column’) phases, with direct silicon-carbon bonds on the silica hydride surface. These bonded phases have the ability to retain polar solutes at high concentrations of organic solvent by aqueous normal-phase (ANP). In addition, non-polar compounds can also be retained on the same column under reversed-phase conditions. The lack of surface silanols leads to fast equilibration times, excellent peak shape and extended column lifetimes for the assay of a wide range of pharmaceuticals, organic acids, carbohydrates, biochemicals, peptides, metabolites and many other compounds.
