An editing checklist
Colours can send you a message! What does red in a traffic light mean? What colour is a police light? Use colours to edit your work. You will need red, orange,
green and blue. When you complete each step, tick it. When you have completed the chart, ask a friend to check your work to make sure that you have covered everything.
Stop! Make sure you stop at the end of a sentence
Use a red pen or pencil to highlight your stops at the end of sentences – full stops, exclamation marks and questions marks. Check: Are there any stops missing? Fill them in. Remember one sentence must deal with one idea. Check: Are any sentences too long? Make sure each sentence deals with only one idea, even if it is a compound or complex sentence. Check: Only use an exclamation or question mark if you need one.
Check: Some abbreviations need full stops e.g. S.O.S.
Caution Beware of incorrect spelling and grammar
Use orange to underline words that might be spelt incorrectly. Check: Use a dictionary and check the spelling of these words. Rewrite the correct word above this word or in the margin. Check: Circle words that are used too often e.g. nice. Use a thesaurus and find other words that are more creative and original. Use orange to underline any sentence that does not make sense. Ask: Is the tense correct? Is the word order correct? Are all the prepositions correct? Is the punctuation correct? Do you need quotation marks? Ask your teacher to help you correct this.
Go! Always start a sentence correctly
