The writing process
Pre-writing/Planning Drafting Revision Editing/Proofreading Publishing/Presenting
It is important to plan carefully before you write. Writing is a process, you have to do it one step at a time and each step builds on what you did before. Here is the whole writing process. Go through it carefully to remind yourself whenever you write.
Brainstorm your ideas
• List your ideas • Make a word bank of interesting words to use • Think of your characters, the plot and the setting
Plan your writing
• Make a mind map • Who is it written for? (audience) • What is its purpose? (story, instructions, etc.) • What style will it be written in? (formal or informal language, etc.)
• How will it be laid out? (as a letter, in paragraphs, in verses, etc.)
Write the first draft
Consider your writing techniques • Will you use facts and or your own ideas? • Will your writing follow a particular pattern? Story, news article, instructions?
• Will you use literal or figurative language? How? • Will you use humour? How?
