NEWS from
Kate Nicholls UKHospitality Chief Executive
This month, UKHospitality published its manifesto for the Scottish Parliament elections, with a Welsh equivalent, local government and metro Mayoral versions soon to follow. These are designed to show incoming administrations and individuals the importance of the hospitality
sector both economically and culturally and suggest ways in which it can be supported. Previously, manifestos such as this have been valuable in “getting our foot in the door” with policymakers and ensuring our name and the sector’s priorities are on the agenda.
This year, following the devastation of the pandemic and the dire need for continued support, it is even more important than ever. We are inching our way towards the reopening, but many businesses are still barely surviving. Businesses still need support to ensure they survive to reopen and are in a position to lead the recovery of the economy. This is integral to the whole United Kingdom, at Westminster, devolved, regional and local levels. Our manifestos are tailored to each of these audiences and we hope that politicians of every persuasion in every region with the capacity to influence policy will take note of its messages.
With proper support from Governments in Holyrood, Westminster and elsewhere, our businesses can spark an economic revival and see villages, towns and cities prospering again. Hospitality already has a great track record at doing just that. This is exactly what our sector did following the financial crisis and we can do it again. UKHospitality’s manifestos make clear exactly what politicians can do to put the sector in the best position to provide jobs, secure investment and get the country up and running again.
In fact, our sector has the potential to go even further, which our
manifestos make evident. Our sector can be in the vanguard of efforts to promote green issues such as carbon reduction and sustainability. We can also spearhead national efforts to promote healthier attitudes to food and drink.
The hospitality sector is at the heart of daily life for so many communities across Britain. It absolutely makes sense to put our sector at the centre of efforts to revitalise our economy. Whoever succeeds in the many elections in Scotland, Wales and England’s towns and cities, let’s hope they understand the importance of what we do.
