The Hospitality Industry Races Ahead on its Mission to Reach Net Zero

Hospitality has been one of the hardest hit industries during what has been an unprecedented and devastating year. As a result of this disruption, the sector is paving a path to reach net zero carbon emissions faster, targeting a date ahead of the government’s 2050 net zero ambition. The Zero Carbon Forum has created much-needed collaboration, set up to unite businesses and put the hospitality sector, alongside others on the right track to tackle climate change.

“A number of trailblazing businesses across the UK have come together to demonstrate climate leadership and responsibility to decarbonise and reach net zero quickly, together. We’re bringing together key players from across the restaurant, pub, casual dining and hotel sectors, to share best practice and create collaborative initiatives to leverage and move the entire sector forward, together. The Zero Carbon Forum is working with members, and a range of sustainability experts, to benefit from shared experiences and insight, and as a result, define a new industry roadmap, starting with emission profiling, identifying industry emission hotspots, and building a plan to combat them. By building a long-lasting network of partnerships and connectedness throughout the hard-hit industry, the forum is setting examples for other industries to learn from and follow.

“With the latest members to join the forum, pub company JD Wetherspoon and our first hotel group, IHG Hotels & Resorts, we represent players from across the whole sector. This allows us to incorporate and align on a broad range of decarbonisation initiatives and collaborative ways to reach net zero.

We have also agreed a new partnership with Carbon Intelligence. Their team of strategists, data scientists, and engineers will help us build an ambitious roadmap to reach net zero, including a target date and action- based milestones along the way.

“After the tough challenges of the past 12 months, it’s crucial to the survival and success of our industry that we embark on a journey to green recovery in a way that makes sense to businesses. Our sector is already taking huge strides towards these goals and is stepping up to play its part by converting to renewables, eliminating

waste and demonstrating leadership through influencing a range of different businesses across the sector.”
