FAMILY A future of opportunity

It may feel like the new school year has only just begun, but if your child or grandchild is in their last year of secondary school then there are some important decisions to be made about what their next step will be.

Thomas Rotherham College is a valued and effective stepping stone to support young people make the transition from a school environment to university or employment. With a tradition of achievement and a future of opportunity, Thomas Rotherham was one of the first sixth form colleges to open in England and has been delivering high-quality learning for 16 to 18-year-olds since 1967. Today, TRC is one of the region’s leading providers of post-16 education, offering a wide range of traditional A-levels and

vocational BTEC diplomas, as well as level 2 courses and sports academies.

If a young person chooses to study A-Levels, then one of the benefits is that they can choose a combination of (almost) any three subject areas they are interested in. This could be a mix of sciences, arts, humanities, languages, maths, or computing and is particularly helpful for students who haven’t yet settled on a career choice. At TRC, they also offer a variety of level 3 vocational courses including business or law, childcare or health and social care, performing arts or dance, creative media or IT. There are also three sports diplomas for students interested in coaching, personal training or outdoor pursuits. Alongside this, TRC is renowned for its sports academies whereby students with sporting prowess can combine training with their education studies and gain valuable experience with clubs like Rotherham United or Rotherham Titans. There are also academies in basketball, netball and golf. The college has fantastic links to professional clubs both in the UK and overseas, and past academy alumni includes Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.

Based in the former grammar school building at Moorgate, TRC students benefit from historical architecture complimented by modern facilities. There is an on-site sports centre, lecture theatre, performance space, plus a two-storey learning resource centre.

There are also opportunities for extra-curricular activities to enhance the student experience, from first aid and sign language to joining the student newspaper or college production. Likewise, work experience placements, careers guidance, learning support, and help with university applications are available from the dedicated progress tutors to ensure students leave college with a solid foundation for the future. Throughout the college, the high level of teaching on offer means that Thomas Rotherham College continues to see academic success; in 2019, TRC had a 98 percent pass rate, with 30 courses achieving an outstanding 100 percent rate. While many students progress to prestigious universities like the Russell Group or Oxbridge, many leave college with the ability to start excellent careers or high-quality apprenticeships. Choosing what next after leaving school is a rite of passage into adulthood, but making the right choice can also feel daunting. Why not join one of TRC’s Virtual Open Events to find out more.
