FAMILY Help to stay at home

Whether it’s help with household chores or a friendly face to talk to, there are times when we could all do with a little extra support to improve our wellbeing.

But finding the right person you can trust is also important for your peace of mind.

There to give you a helping hand when you need it the most is Jenny Travis who launched Jenz Support Services. Living well starts with looking after yourself and your home and Jenny’s main aim is to empower individuals to live an independent life by providing safe and professional support to a range of people with varying needs.

Having previously worked for housing associations and charities for older people, Jenny started her own home help company last year after feeling disheartened that home care fees were rising without an improvement in services. She truly cares for every single one of her

clients and has their best interests at heart. “A little bit of my time goes a long way and really helps make a difference. A clean and tidy home could mean someone can come home from hospital and not have to go into respite,” she says. Along with working with the elderly and people with learning disabilities or mental health problems, Jenz Support Services is also there for vulnerable young adults or even families who need help with domestic tasks. Some people may need help with cooking and cleaning, while others may want companionship when family and friends must stay apart. As a sole trader, choosing Jenz Support Services means you or your loved-one will always receive help from the same smiley and optimistic person, meaning friendships can develop naturally during your time spent together.

“My clients always say to me, ‘don’t you ever stop coming as I’d be lost without you’ and that to me is job well done.”

The Porterbrook, a specialist residential, dementia and respite care home, has closed its doors to non-essential visitors for a second time to safeguard those in its care. But while family may have to hold off visiting for just a little while longer, The Porterbrook team are making a huge effort not to burst that festive spirit bubble by having lots of fun and varied Christmas activities planned over the winter months. Staff are gearing up for their annual Elf Day where they all dress up as Santa’s little helpers and sprinkle some festive cheer around the care home. There will also be a Christmas jumper day for residents to join in by wearing seasonal sweaters.

Along with baking festive treats and singing Christmas carols, there will also be wine, cheese and mince pie evenings with a chance to share Christmas memories of years gone by. Residents will also be able to enjoy classic Christmas film screenings in The Porterbrook’s own cinema room.

After not seeing family face-to- face for the majority of the year, this Christmastime will be emotionally difficult for many residents. Staff will be helping them make Christmas cards to send heartfelt messages to loved ones and they also have a large interactive table and smaller

tablets to ensure regular video calls to family members.

Christmas is all about community

and The Porterbrook residents have become even more tight knit during 2020. The home from home experience in a luxury environment means all residents’ families are comforted in the knowledge that their elderly loved ones are in a safe and caring place with great companionship.

Care home manager, Sheilagh Sweeney says: “The health, safety and wellbeing of our residents and staff is our top priority. While the home remains closed to non- essential visitors for now, we will make sure that families are still able to see and speak to their loved ones as much as possible through window visits and video calling this Christmas. Lots of our residents have become very familiar with video calls and keeping in touch with family members is extremely important to their overall wellbeing.”
