They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but 2020 has been the year of an educational intervention for members of Rotherham u3a.
For over 25 years, the Rotherham u3a has been providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in the form of 35 activity groups in a range of interests, stretching from arts and crafts to dance and fitness. However, when the initial

lockdown was imposed in March, all in-person group meetings had to stop.

Tricia Macredie, quips, most members have now built up a new set of technology skills equivalent to that of their youngest grandchildren. The photography group finally had time to get to grips with photo editing software. Singing for Fun members rehearsed online from their own individual homes. Members also started group chats on Whatsapp to keep checking in on each other’s welfare.
As time passed and restrictions eased, some groups who could safely meet in groups of six and social distance were able to restart activities. One such class was the grow your own gardening group which recommenced mid-summer to carry out a short schedule of gardening tasks at Clifton Park’s Walled Garden.
They say community is the antidote to isolation and, though apart for most of the year, Rotherham u3a have never been as well connected. Another change 2020 has brought is that the national u3a movement has dropped their original slogan of ‘University of the Third Age’ in favour of ‘Learn, Laugh and Live.’ Although the majority of present members are over 55, there has in fact never been a lower age limit, and those under 55 are actively invited to join. To become a member, you must still not be in full-time employment, but this now means it’s not just people post-retirement. Due to the pandemic, more and more people have sadly found themselves out of work, their jobs made redundant or working fewer hours. This spare time could be used productively to learn new skills or take up new hobbies and inspire current members with new ideas. For more information about Rotherham u3a visit their website:
