OUT & ABOUT
Help support
The voluntary sector is a vital part of the community and supports various people in society to live in a better world. But due to the coronavirus pandemic, charities and community organisations have faced the most unprecedented challenges of a generation.
Financial positions have deteriorated for most due to cancelled or limited fundraising events, while Covid-19-related safety measures have increased costs. Some are struggling to deliver key support; others may have seen a surge in
local charities this Christmas
demand for their services.
Whatever the challenges, charities need our help now more than ever. We’re all in this together and our South Yorkshire community has continued to prove that throughout 2020. Remember, money isn’t the only way to give - this year has been financially demanding for many. Follow the charities on social media and like and share their posts to boost their profile amongst your friends or followers. See how you can get involved; volunteer your time if it is safe to do so within Covid restrictions. Once charity shops are open again, most may be glad of new items to keep stock topped up so don’t discard; donate.
Here are just a few ways you can support charities in South Yorkshire this festive season.
Barnsley Hospice set to
open new retail hub Having previously been used as a donation and sorting centre, Barnsley Hospice’s Dodworth base has been transformed into a new one- stop shop for clothes, entertainment, furniture and homeware. Supporters will now be able to drop off donations and pick up bargains at the same time.
The new retail hub replaces a string of High Street shops which sadly had to close their doors for good in the autumn due to the financial pressures of the pandemic.
Since 1994, Barnsley Hospice has been providing compassionate, high quality care for anyone with a progressive life-limiting illness including cancer, motor neurone disease and heart disease. But they need to raise over £2m each year in charity donations to fund patient care and support for families. It relies entirely on charity donations to achieve this amount. An additional £1.6m is provided by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).
The new retail hub will be open weekdays 10am-2pm and is based at Fall Bank Industrial Estate in Dodworth, S75 3LS just a short drive from junction 37 of the M1 with ample free parking.
Compliments of the season to all our readers
2020 has definitely been a year we won’t forget.
Despite the difficulties we have had to face in both our personal and working lives one thing for sure is we are in this together.
We are humbled by the support and positive feedback we received following our come back edition in September. It really does make our job so rewarding
especially during such trying times like we have faced this year.
We look forward to sharing our stories and continuing to support our local independent businesses in 2021. There is a very true saying that is very fitting to the year we have all had ‘the best things in life are free’ and I am proud to say so are we.
