A knuckle boom excavator picks up 1-to-3-inch rock-aggregate from a container barge and strategically places the rock next to the hull of the M/V Golden Ray to slow erosion.


With respect to the suitability of the VB-10,000 for


this work, Unified Command told Wire Rope Exchange that “Te choice of VB 10000 for this task was based on the fact that she is the only US Flag - Jones Act compliant heavy lift vessel with 7,500-ton capacity. In addition, she is outfitted with a unique lift frame and load control configuration as well as multiple layers of redundancy making her the only suitable platform to undertake this project.”


SUBJECT TO LITIGATION As we went to press, work was proceeding under this plan. However, it should be noted that the original salvage contractor, Donjon-SMIT, filed suit in Federal District Court claiming that they were improperly replaced after the ship’s owner rejected their plan for removing the vessel in smaller (~600 ton) sections and awarded the work to T&T Salvage. U.S. District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood, while acknowledging that Donjon-SMIT was incurring irreparable financial losses while work continued, refused to issue an injunction on the basis that stopping work would be averse to the greater public interest in timely removal of the wreck. For their part, Donjon-SMIT has indicated to


the court a preference for its small section removal method, but a willingness to proceed with the large section approach should the ship’s owner insist on that alternative. At this time, the VB 10,000 is not in transit to the site of the wreck. Regardless of that outcome, this is a fantastically complex salvage effort that will have a series of dramatic heavy lift operations at its core.
