Petersen Stainless Rigging Responds to Growing Demand for Larger Shackles
> UK-based manufacturer Petersen Stainless Rigging has responded to ever-increasing demand for its larger stainless-steel shackles by taking delivery of a brand new Vertical Machining Centre from Mills CNC Ltd in Leamington Spa, UK. Petersen Stainless Rigging has been
forging stainless steel shackles for over 100 years, and use this expertise to deliver market-leading products. They work closely with European suppliers to ensure the stainless steel drawn bar used is of the highest quality and fully traceable, before using specialist manufacturing methods to ensure the structural integrity of the material is preserved. Petersen upset forge, rather than drop forge, all their shackles because this method ensures the grain of the steel flows around the shackle head. This results in excellent fatigue and corrosion resistance, as well as high strength. The holes in the
shackle head are then precision-machined rather than stamped, the traditional method. Machining the holes ensures very tight tolerances can be maintained, providing a better fit when the pin is fitted to the body. A good fit is particularly important for load pins, but it reduces the risk of bending for all types of pin, improving the longevity of the shackle. Kevin Bell, CEO of Petersen Stainless
