In partnership with the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation, Rotherham U3A is starting this new sports-based group for both existing members and non-members to join in with after being bowled over by this great initiative. Walking cricket is a fast-growing sport that was initiated last year by ex-cricketer and Barnsley U3A member, Mac McKechnie. Since then, Mac and the YCF have introduced many Yorkshire U3A groups to the sport, with Rotherham one of the most recent to get on side.
But what is walking cricket? Exactly what it sounds like – the sport you love just played at a slower pace with no running allowed. From the ‘runs’ to the fielding, everything must be walked, meaning it is great for older people or those less physically able who still want to enjoy the thrill of the game.
A match typically lasts for an hour and half – not six – and is played with a soft ball. Although less strenuous than conventional cricket, it still provides good cardio-vascular exercise and also helps with agility and hand-eye co- ordination when catching the ball. Rotherham U3A have had extensive support from the YCF to establish a
group which will be held on alternate Thursdays at Rotherham Leisure Complex. They have helped with equipment to start with, and, if the group proves popular, Rotherham U3A will take over and add walking cricket to their extensive range of hobby groups for those retired or semi-retired and aged 55 and above. With the U3A, it costs just £25 to become a member for the year which opens up a whole world of activities and classes to join, from arts and crafts to languages and creative writing – and hopefully, walking cricket. The first meeting is on Thursday 26th March at 10.30am at Rotherham Leisure Complex. Anyone is invited to try walking cricket for just £3 per person. Following the Easter break, meeting will be fortnightly, with sessions booked in for Thursday 23rd April and 7th May.
