WALK

Rotherham Ring Route:

Lindrick Common, Woodsetts to Firbeck

with Rotherham Metro Ramblers

This section of the Rotherham Ring Route encompasses the rural areas of southern Rotherham on the boundary with Nottinghamshire, including Woodsetts, Letwell, Firbeck and Langold.

Distance: 5.3 miles / 8.7 km

Starting Point: Lindrick Common, end of Lindrick Lane. S81 8AY Finishing Point: Firbeck Church.

Transport: Bus 19a from Rotherham Interchange to Woodsetts (Butchers Arms). Bus 20 (TM Travel) from Firbeck – every two hours, stops at the church and goes to Rotherham Interchange.

Note: if joining route from Butchers Arms at Woodsetts, walk up Lindrick Rd for 650m to its end.

Pass Lindrick Rd on the left and, with the golf course on the right, continue on access lane. In 150m turn left on the first footpath (signposted) at wooden fencing. Continue past ornate fencing on right. Keep housing development on the left with open views to your right until you reach Worksop Rd.

Letwell

Bear left for 30m then cross the road to join Cross Lane bridleway. Follow the track to the left of the hedged area initially then out into open fields. Continue ahead towards Wallingwells. At bridleway crossroads, turn left to follow the track. When this meets another track, turn right. In 400m at T-junction, turn left along a metalled road to reach Rotherham Baulk.

Cross the lane to enter Buckwood Farm yard over a stile next to a metal gate at the wooden footpath sign. Continue ahead to follow track through fields. At right-hand bend, go left over wooden stile and proceed diagonally left across field.

On the far side of field, cross the stream by concrete bridge to access another field. Cross field diagonally left and follow wood edge to small bridge over a drainage ditch. Cross over and, keeping hedges on your right, follow paths to outskirts of Letwell.

*The small village has a number of Grade II listed properties including a fine example of a Dove Cote which was restored in 1948. Cross a track and continue forward to the Dinnington - Oldcotes road (B6463). Cross and continue along two field paths, bearing diagonally right to Kidd Lane at Firbeck and on to the church. *Firbeck was the home of Danny Stamford who patented a design for an iron and wood plough in 1730. This became known as The Rotherham Plough, and was a standard ploughing implement for many years. During World War II, arable fields to the north

of the village were used as an airfield and some of the houses in the village were requisitioned for the service men. There is a monument commemorating RAF Firbeck and the ground crews who served there from 1940 to 1948 in the fields outside the village

RETURN ROUTE Distance: 7 miles / 11.2km Starting Point: Firbeck Church

Finishing Point: Lindrick Common, Lindrick Lane

At Firbeck church, turn right and follow the road until reaching the left-hand bend. Turn right and follow the Salt Hill bridleway up to the B6463 road. Cross the road diagonally and take the bridleway to the right through a small wood. This bridleway crosses a field and leads to the entrance of Dyscarr Wood on the right.

On entering the wood, take the path on the right which follows the edge of the wood. This gravel path eventually leads to the entrance to Langold Lake.

Enter the lake area and pass the toilets on your

left. Follow the path to the left of the lake and then through the wood. Turn left and follow the side of the stream. This path then meets the path from Buckwood Farm to Miller Lands which is the Rotherham Ring Route. Take the left-hand path up the field towards Buckwood Farm. At Buckwood Farm retrace your steps along the Ring Route back to the start at Lindrick Common.
