PETS

A respectful goodbye for your pet

Whether sudden or anticipated, coping with the loss of our beloved family pets is often an emotional, distressing and overwhelming time. We’re never ready to say goodbye.

Although it’s something we don’t like to think about, having a plan in place for when that fateful time does come – and knowing what to expect – can save pets and their owners the unnecessary suffering and provide our animals with the honourable farewell they deserve. At Old Flatts Farm Pet and Equine Crematorium, they have helped hundreds of pet owners say goodbye to their old friends with dignity, compassion and care over the last two years. In that time, owner, Chris

Beckett, has built up a phenomenal reputation, becoming the number one pet crematorium in the north of England based on his genuine five- star reviews and ratings.

They all echo the same thoughts: Chris showed them true empathy and kindness to see light in such dark and sorrowful times. At Old Flatts Farm, the

cremation plays such a small part in the process. It is the wrap- around service - from respectfully

collecting pets from home or the vets, to sending ashes back within 72 hours with a handwritten card and forget-me-not seeds - for which they have become a trusted and credible name. “People are so used to everything being corporate in society, where businesses have a script or timings to stick to, that they expect the worst in some way. But we’re not like that. We give people space and time for reflection which is what has blown people away.

“Everyone who walks through this door is at their lowest point, but they all show different forms of grief. I can’t expect that one size fits all. Some don’t want to see their pet in the chapel of rest, others need many visits before they can let go. Either way there is no pressure or hurry,” Chris says.

Having been a schoolteacher for over 20 years, Chris opened Old Flatts Farm in 2018 after the personal impact of losing his own dog, Alaskan malamute, Tula.

He was shocked by the traditional veterinary route and felt disheartened by the service he received, learning his beloved dog was shipped out of town for a communal cremation, before the ambiguous ashes were sent back in a cardboard box wrapped in a plastic bag two weeks later. From then on, Chris vowed to never let other pet owners feel detached from saying goodbye, turning the old milking parlour at his family’s Treeton farm into a private chapel of rest with a discreet crematorium.

The service isn’t limited to four- legged furry friends. Along with

dogs and cats, Old Flatts Farm have cremated all creatures great and small from hamsters and mice to parrots and koi carp and even a 10kg monitor lizard. With good motorway access, people travel from far and wide to use his service.

One family came all the way from

the French Alps still in their skiing gear after their dog was taken ill on holiday. While a man from York brought his 96-year-old tortoise for Chris to give it a fitting departure from this world, the tortoise having survived being run over by a horse and cart in the 1920s and being stolen three times.
