Taking a fresh approach to care

Care for our elderly loved ones is rarely out of the media these days. Whether it’s the cost of care or the challenges of securing it from a reliable source, it sometimes feels like a problem that’s too big to fix. But one Rotherham-based care provider believes it has a practical solution. We talk to Dan Archer, founder of Visiting Angels, about how his business thinks differently.

As a local man and a care sector specialist, Dan Archer established Visiting Angels in 2017 to serve the area where he grew up and support the community he loves. With an emphasis on making a positive difference and putting people at the heart of the businesses, Visiting Angels is fulfilling that commitment and helping families in North Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley. Dan believes that the care sector as a whole operates along similar lines and has found it difficult to innovate. Instead of trying to overhaul the entire sector, the focus

of Visiting Angels is to change things one step at a time by focusing on both the carer and the client. Dan explains: “It is true to say that Visiting Angels has a different approach. The business makes the carers or Angels the most important people in the organisation. It pays up to £11.30 per hour and reward their caregivers for loyalty. “We feel that if we look after our staff they will be able happy in their job and naturally take better care of our clients. We don’t do rushed 15-minute home visits, our minimum call is one hour so our carers have time to care. Because we look after them, our staff retention is really good and it means that when a family chooses a carer they will be with them for as long as they need.” Visiting Angels prides itself on consistency it offers to families and recognises that one of its carers may be the only person who visits, hence the importance of its Choose your Caregiver initiative.

someone’s home and I want to make sure our clients choose who that person is,” says Dan. “We also find that if a client is reluctant to accept help and their family are worried about them, being able to choose who visits does help some clients to be more accepting.”

The support that Visiting Angels provides can make a real difference and is not just about safety and security. Some clients need help to get ready for the day or to prepare

meals while others see their daily lives transformed by managing to get out and about again thanks to a helping hand. Visiting Angels will pop to the shops or go for coffee with a client and getting out of the house safely is really important to people’s wellbeing.

This successful and effective approach hasn’t gone unrecognised as Visiting Angels were proud to be a finalist in the 2018 Great British Care Awards.
