FAMILY
celebrations for Les’ centenary
Charitable Amy Hebden and Les Attoe
There is no rarer occasion than turning 100. But what do you give a centenarian for their birthday?
When Les Attoe from Goldthorpe was approaching his milestone birthday this February, he didn’t want gifts or material things – he’d had 99 years of opening presents.
Macmillan Cancer Support. “Macmillan supported my family when my son-in-law was diagnosed with cancer back in 2006, we can’t thank them enough for the support we received, it made such a difference at a horrible time. “I’ve had four hips and a new knee in recent years, I don’t need anything else! I’d much rather my birthday presents going to someone else in need, I’ve got everything I need.”
‘‘I don’t need anything else! I’d much rather my birthday presents going to someone else in need’’
Instead, he generously asked
family and friends to donate to a charity close to his heart,
Les was joined by his family and friends in Goldthorpe to mark the momentous day, and Les let us into
the secret to getting to 100 - a glass of water every morning.
Macmillan Cancer Support rely on 98 percent of public donations to operate, so without the support of people like Les, they wouldn’t be able to help people affected by cancer.
If you would like to do your bit for
charity, Macmillan have announced a 26-mile charity walk around Yorkshire on Saturday 13th June called Macmillan’s Mighty Hike It takes place in the Yorkshire Dales, starting in the Malham Show Fields and follows the River Aire, passing Janet’s Foss waterfall and the pretty market town of Grassington.
As if the amazing views across God’s own county weren’t enough, walkers can also look forward to a buffet lunch followed by more treats at the finish line including a finisher’s medal and well-deserved glass of bubbly.
